HOWEVER, when trying to upload MOST of the shots i have from my D5000 I am told the file size is too big.....I know there is a way to change that on the camera, but havnt yet learned that....
dont reduce the size in the camera
the options are.........and I'm sure you will
NOW read the manual...
[actually the Nikon manual is rubbish...get David Busch D5000 off Amazon]
anyway.....1st decision = to shoot RAW or jpeg
the experts suggest RAW as [correctly] you can recover more data from the file as its like a digital negative
BUT you will need some image editing software and understand whats what
and spend 'some' time on the computer converting the RAW image to a jpeg which you can show/download or print
I chose - to get started-- in the shooting menu
jpeg
Fine - quality
Large - size
which will give about a 4MB image, viewable on your PC screen right away, and capable of printing up to A4
I use Photoshop Elements #7 - allows me to tweak and adjust my jpeg image....and as will soon be mentioned

the jpeg image suffers an IQ reduction every time you save it
well i do my editing [on a copy] and save once ..horses for courses
no doubt I too will use RAW eventually - but there's enough to learn at the beginning as it is..!......
so - now you have a 4200x2800 4MB [roughly] image on your PC
with some image editing software you can
resize the image [ use a copy]
to 800x600 and use on the web/emails or upload to TP
or resize to say 1024x680 which I upload to PhotoBucket and link to my posts in TP
ALL THE ABOVE is what I do - no doubt others may/will advise different
whatever works for you....
