Hi,

Following etiquette thought it would be good to get a little introduction out into the welcome board.

I'm a newbie when it comes to DSLR photography, having taken the plunge on a Nikon D3100 with kit lens last week I'm beginning to grasp the basics of the manual functions of my camera, framing shots, aperture/shutter priority and depth of field.

Whoever this guy is made a pretty good beginners guide and it's got me started well.

That said I'm soon to be taking a trip to New york and looking for a cheaper lens upgrade (at US Dollar prices instead of extortionate UK pounds), I've posted this question on a Nikon group on flickr, maybe you guys can help too:

I've recently picked up my first DSLR in the Nikon D3100. I've been trying out the kit lens with various types of shot for the best part of a week now in preparation for a trip to New York I'll be making (from London).

Staying in Lower manhattan near central park I've noticed there are a few places I can go to get a one or two lenses at US dollar (as opposed to extortionate pound prices).

With a budget of about £200-£300 (about $300 - $450) and me wanting to take a mix of landscape as well as portrait photos to begin with.

Are there any particular lenses I should be looking at getting whilst I have this oppurtunity to get lenses at lower prices on a trip where I'll be taking a mix of shots? I'm particularly interested in experimenting further with depth of field so would appreciate something capable of a wider aperture than the f/3.5 - 5.6 the kit lens offers as well. Maybe a good prime lens could offer this?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Good to join what seems like a large and helpful group hopefully it helps my photography out in the long run. Thanks.

Adorama is the shop to visit in NY. My husband is American and he bought some gear from them when we were last there - great service and prices.

B&H are good too but no first hand experience of them :)
