Hi All

My very first post on this site:D I'm new to photography though did it as a kid back in the 70's with a 35mm Praktica B200.

Beginning of the year I bought one of the last Nikon D80's and a second hand Sigma 50-500mm, I'm not rich and assumed purchasing this kit would mean exceptional pictures, how wrong was I:shake::lol:

I have been struggling every photo opportunity I get but trying to teach myself and preferring to play than read manuals mean I'm not very successful, I stumbled across this site researching Manfrotto 393 gimbal heads. Figured this'll help me take better pic's but I doubt it, does boost my confidence though;)

A typical day out for me is, well lets take last Sunday. Got up early and it was dull and overcast, struggled off to my local woods with the heaviest tripod you can carry knowing that the shutter speeds were going to be slow, setting up in some bushes and standing there for two hours camera aimed at a clearing with a little light, absolutely nothing in front of me when a group of birds landed in the tree directly overhead. I swung the camera round and upwards and got/seen my first ever Goldcrest, pictures were obviously rubbish as I'd focused on the bird with the sky behind resulting in silhouettes but hey, I saw my first Goldcrest:D
A little later in front of my camera a fox came strolling through and as I patiently waited for that shot it crashed down with rain, I had no choice but to get the carrier bag out of my pocket and get it on the camera quick, the fox thought, sod this and scarpered:wave:

I have been concentrating on bird pictures as I just love getting up in the morning and going out, you're never sure what you're going to see while out and hopefully one day my pic's will be good enough to put up on here [though judging by the quality on here, maybe not:(].

Well that's a little bit about me, I can be found in Chatham, Kent and am the wrong side of 45 to be taking lousy pictures:thinking::lol:

Got to get back to the classifieds now, reckon more gear will sort it:thumbs:

Bye

Brian:wave:

Hi Brian and welcome.

10 out of 10 for your efforts to get pics.
Keep trying.

Hi Brian, and :welcome: to TP.

Let me assure you, while cloudy days are said to be gloomy, it's a far cry better than a hot sunny day which causes everything to be blown-out! I've been back in Saudi for a few months now, and I'm still struggling to get any good exposures during the day time. And while there's hardly any rain here, it rains one or two days a year (and today is one of those vrey few), the sand and humidity just makes it all the more intolerable.

Point is, grass is always greener on the other side :p

Hi and thanks for the welcome:D

Its pic's on sites like these that keep me going, occasionally I get a picture that stands out from the rest [not too often though:help:]

Saudi:eek: It's a place I'd loved to have seen/visited, I know the grass is always greener etc but it just won't stop raining over here:shake:
It's 5.55am and still raining in Kent, guess we're luckier though than the guys in Cumbria though.

Hoping to sneak out again the weekend even if it's just for a few hours, Elmley's not that far from me and if it is raining you can always stay in the car and get shots out of the window.

Hello and welcome Brian, youre less than a mile from me:thumbs:
I know what you mean about getting good pictures and finding the right lighting, went to a football match the other week and it was so bright i struggled to get a really good picture.
This sunday im off to take some pictures of Kayaking on the Medway

Hello Brian. Welcome to the forum. I'm quite new here too.
I'm on the borders of Kent, close to the A2.
Your tales remind me why I just don't want to do wildlife pics. Keep trying, its got to stop raining sometime, right? :)

Hi and thanks for saying hello guys:D

I've never really done action/sports photography before Steve but no doubt will get round to it, for me it's getting away from city life and escaping into the countryside or coastal venues.

I used to walk our husky along the Medway at Riverside Country Park oblivious of what was going on around me, I bought myself and Son a camera and we started taking pictures of the wildlife. Suddenly there was so much more to see:eek: we never knew how many different types of wading birds there were along there, we started taking pic's, keeping lists of what we'd seen. Getting all excited when we'd spotted something new to the both of us then having to look up it's identity, it was a real buzz.

Photography to me is adventure, escapism, tranquillity, getting the perfect picture is just a bonus [just as well really:shrug::lol:].

Brian.
