Evening all. I'm new here but not new to photography as such, on an amateur level anyway. I haven't done much in the way of photography for a few years now. My last camera which I still have but don't use is a Fuji S602 Zoom, old yes, but I took some lovely shots with it when I used to use it.

Right then, I want to get back into it, I need to get a DSLR. Money is not tight, however I have been looking at the Canon 400D, old I know but it's a very capable camera. I don't want to through endless money at equipment just in case I don't get into it again. I came on here to see what's going in the classifieds, imagine how my heart sank when I saw you have to wait 60 days to even buy something

So, I shall stick with eBay and AV Forums for now. Once I do get sorted, I want to have a serious go at macros, I used to do a lot of those back in the day with my S602. Compound eyes is what I'd like to shoot. I'm not sure which lens I would need yet, but could do with a clue if someone could help so I can budget accordingly.

Here's a few shots taken with my S602. Let me know what you think :)

This won me photo of the month on Digital Forums, the subject was music

I think that's enough, I got a bit carried away lol. <<<< Applicable at the time as I'd posted 22 lol, didn't expect a limit for a photography site :(

Welcome. From a fellow forum newbie, and fellow snake keeper!

Thanks mate. What snake/s do you have?

I've got a bit of a mixture lol. Mostly royals, burms and hognose snakes though :) How about yourself?

Loving the water droplet shot by the way.

Only have a Boa, reason......I have a wife

Thanks, I took no end of water droplet shots that day, timing is everything, but then again so is getting the focus spot on :D

Righto, a Canon 400D with kit lens and battery should be with me in a few days time, I already have a rather nice tripod. I need a macro lens now, maybe a Sigma 90mm, however, I am going to try a reversing ring to start with and see what photos that produces, I've seen some promising shots here and there, surprisingly good in fact.

Edit: Camera FINALLY been posted today, should be with me by Monday. Waiting so long has spoilt it I must say.

Edit: Camera came today. All works but the rubber eyepiece is missing and so is the AA battery holder for the battery grip. It's been hard work buying a DSLR I can tell you!

I cannot get on with the 400D at all, being a glasses wearer and having to use the viewfinder only makes me feel dizzy and sick after just a couple of minutes use. So, I will be selling the 400D and replacing it with a 550D which is what I should have got in the first place!

Why would the 550d be different to the 400d?

Have you tried adjusting the focus on the viewfinder (diopter?). It's the little wheel on the side of it.

Ah. I've always found the auto focussing on Liveview a little hit and miss and slow, so tend to use manual focus. 10X zoom is good for critical focus, but might be difficult for hand held. If you find that small screen limiting, don't forget liveview feeds through the hmdi port, so you could put a larger screen on. We've used the lilliput 10" ones before for film work, but you can get all sizes.

I should have a Canon 550D (body only) in the post tomorrow :)

I got a Sigma 70-300mm about a week or so ago for £80 in mint condition. I just need a 1:1 macro lens now.

Got my 550D yesterday :) Loving it. I bought a Sigma 105mm EX DG f2.8 macro lens which comes with a Marumi DRF14C Macro Ring Flash for £230. I'm not sure the flash ring will work with a 550D as it's not a model mentioned on the makers website. I will find out on Tuesday though.

Can't wait for my macro lens to come now :)

If you need any help or advice- send me a PM

Les ;)

PM's not working, not sure why.

I tried sending you this....

Hi Les
You said if I had any questions that I could ask you, so, I have one :)

I was just looking around for Kenko extension tubes and saw this set on eBay

Now I know they don't work with Canon EFS lenses but that's ok as I don't have any lol. I am getting the Sigma 105mm macro lens tomorrow that I mentioned in my welcome thread. I assume it would work ok with the tubes but do you know for sure either way or not sure yourself?

Many thanks

Simon
