Just joined the forum on the recommendation of someone from a craft forum - so thought I'd better pop in and introduce myself.

I and a scrapbooker and card maker and use my photos in both arts. Until now, I've been using an ancient bridge camera - a Nikon Coolpix 4500 but have for some time hankered after a real  camera.

I've been left a small gift as a legacy and plan to spend this on a new DSLR. I'm going to check out what the different forum threads say about it, but I'm currently favouring a Nikon D3100.

Thanks to the fourms, I've already discovered an excellent site for send hand Nikon and Canon gear (they may be others, please tell me!) and I am also thinking about an 18-105m lens rather than the standard kit lens. But need to make sure it's not too heavy as I've not got very steady hands.

Blimey, what a long intro - sorry! :bonk:

Hi Mole, and welcome to TP. The D3100 is a good little camera, as to lenses, I guess it depends on what subjects you will want to shoot?

welcome to the forum Mole, as for glass the 18-105mm is a better option then the standard kit lens of 18-55mm, in my opinion ;)

That said, you'll buy lenses to cover different areas of Photography, Portrait, landscape, close up/ Macro or long distance such as Wildlife/Birds etc- really depends on what you like to shoot

its a learning curve no doubt about that
