Hey there guys,

My name is Ryan and I am the very definition of the term 'amateur photographer'. Infact, you could almost go as far to say I'm below amateur.

I'm going to be honest with you, up until about 6 years ago, I had no interest in photography whatsoever. The only pictures I had ever taken were either on a digital camera or on my phone. This changed however, with one trip to Silverstone for a race weekend with my dad in 2013.

We both rocked up there with our cheap little digital cameras to take pictures of the cars and some of the scenery. Much to my shock, I saw people turning up with these really expensive cameras and lenses the size of a tree. And I even saw people turning up with 2 or 3 cameras all with different lenses on them. You can imagine, me and my old man felt like a pair of plumbs. This is where my interest in photography sparked.

Cut to 2 years ago, me and my best mate were planning a trip to Silverstone for his birthday weekend. This was when I decided to buy myself my first 'proper' camera. I spoke to a couple of people I know who had cameras and did some research on 'best beginner cameras', 'cameras that take the best pictures' (I know, comical, right?).

I eventually bought myself a Canon 1300D. I was like a kid in a sweet shop when it arrived. I thought I was going to be the best thing since sliced bread. I mean, how hard could it be? You point the camera at what you want to take a picture of and press a button. Oh boy, how wrong was I? Nobody told me about shutter speeds, ambient lighting, camera settings or even manual and auto focus.

I quickly found out that the lens the camera came with was not going to cut the mustard at Silveretone and that there was so much more to photography than just point and shoot. I needed something with slightly more zoom. Alas, I bought my first ever lens. A Canon EF 75-300mm f4-5.6. I'm still using this lens to this day. Infact as I write this, I'm not long home from Silverstone where I have used it. I'm hoping to post some pictures I've taken of the weekend to try and get your guys feedback on how to improve.

So that's pretty much me and photography. I love motorsport and things that go fast and make load noises. I get by with the very limited knowledge I have with my very basic kit. I'm here really to try and learn some new things, see how you more experienced guys do things and maybe, just maybe get myself out of this below amateur bracket I am in.

Anyway, I think I've bored you all enough now. Thanks for having me here, and I look forward to getting to know you all a bit better!

Hi Ryan

Welcome to TP, you will find it a good resource to learn from and share with the folks here.

We all started in different ways so the journey you are on is yours though may not be unique.

Photography is part about the kit, part about the person using it and how they are developing their understanding of the camera usage techniques and as you will likely find, the limitations of your kit........only then either improving your technique and/or realising that the shot you want achieve is being held back by the kit limitations. Then a case of saving for the GAS ;)

Please don't listen to anyone that tells that new upgraded gear is the only thing that will improve your pictures. As mentioned above that will be the case but only once you have learned why that might be the case and hence what any new gear will give to address that "need".

All the best on your journey and I look forward to seeing some of your motorsports pictures soon.

Welcome to the forum Ryan :welcome:

Super intro, glad you enjoyed the F1 experience and the joy (pain) of photography.

Get posting and lets see your first attempts (y)

Hi Ryan, And welcome aboard TP, looking forward to hearing from you and maybe seeing some of your images on the various forums. "Enjoy".

Hi and welcome to TP.
When I first joined here I got involved with meet ups and for me this was the best way I found to improve my photography.
I was very surprised how many people would happily give there time and explain things to me and they never grew tired of my questions.
I've been online since 96 and of all the forums I've used there is no doubt this has been the best and friendliest and it's a good way to make friends as well.
Add yourself to the tog buddy list or have a search for other members near you.
Good luck and like others have said, I look forward to seeing some of your photos.

Thanks for the welcome and the advice! I've been window shopping for a few new lenses over the weekend that aren't going to break the bank. I'll upload some pictures from the weekend just passed and get some feedback of where I should be going.

Hi mate, thanks for the welcome. I might just have a look into the meet-ups. It'd be good to learn more about my camera and see if I'm using settings that would benefit me.

I did a little looking around for photography forums, TP seemed to be the most active and had a lot of types of photography that I'd like to learn in the future.
