Hi, my name's Jason and i'm keen to learn some good photography techniques.
I enjoy taking photos and fancied a more advanced camera than my old digi was, so I bought myself an 'as new condition' Nikon D60 with an 18-55 lens and a polarising filter.

I'm just starting to learn some basic techniques with Adobe Photo paint and i'm also on the lookout for a couple of new lenses. My girlfriend is going to buy me a 70-300 lens for my birthday and i'm on the lookout for a much smaller lens too (maybe a 55, i'm not sure yet).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks for looking.

Hi Jason and welcome to TP.

If you have an 18-55 and are getting a 70-300mm lens then is is quite comprehensive coverage.
I'd stick with that pair for a while to see whether you develop a leaning towards any particular type of subject.
If you do find yourself drawn to a specialist area just shout and people will advise on lenses.

I generally take picures of transport (ie, airshows, car shows etc) I find the polarising filter excellent for this (due to the effects of light on the glass/the sky) I would however like a bit more detail . I went to Edinburgh zoo recently and found my standard lens wasn't well suited to some of the animals.

The 70-300mm will be the bees knees for that.
If you have to shoot through wire mesh get the lens right up close to so it will be out of focus and not show too much in your shots.
