hi everyone,
i've got myself into a bit of a panic,
I have been given a lovely 40th birthday surprise of getting a trip to see the northern lights in December, and I would love to be able to take some good shots of the lights if we get to see them plus the usual tourist sort of pictures.
i've been looking on the net for more information on this, but I don't seem to be getting anywhere fast.
I wouldn't even give myself Amateur status at taking photos as I have always had a point and shoot camera.
I currently have a Fuji 770exr, which i've had for about a year now, which I still haven't got to grips with.
i've only really used it for trying! to take pictures of my daughter doing her gymnastics, and when she does competitions, (9 out of 10 pics fail)
any movement is a nightmare,
I think maybe its time to get a proper camera but on a tight budget as with xmas coming up.
sorry to go on a bit but any suggestions or help would be very much appreciated
thanks

Welcome to TP - You've come to the right place for all things photography that's for sure. Regarding the Northern lights, if you have a look at people's pictures on here, they will generally put the exposure times and general camera settings used, so that will give you an idea for starters.

I've also seen guides in magazines on how to do it, it must have been in astronomy mags earlier in the year.

Have a fab trip!!

Hi Steve and welcome to TP

I see that you're already getting loads of advice in your thread in Talk Basics, so I thought I'd just pop in here to say 'hello'.
It's good to have you here and please feel free to jump in and ask about anything that you want.

p.s. To add to what Sara said, if you do find an inspirational Northern Lights picture here (which I'm sure you will!) don't be afraid to ask the poster about how they shot it.
We're a friendly bunch with plenty of willing helpers so don't be shy :)

A very warm welcome and I look forward to seeing your work on the forums.

Thanks for the warm welcome.
I reckon i will hanging around a while hoping to get some good tips.
And maybe improve my photography.
Cheers
