Hi folks, have been lurking for a week or so and admiring the work posted. I'm quite new to photography although I do have a Canon EOS SLR purchased some years ago, always being skint meant I didn't learn properly as couldn't afford all the film processing quickly enough, no access to dark room etc. But now after 3 years of wanting one, I have just got a Canon EOS 500D DSLR and we've been inseperable ever since.
I'm very much a newbie and am hoping you can all give me some direction. I'm interested primarily in taking great portraits especially of my children, but also in nature photography of my beautiful environment (I live almost in the Scottish Highlands, very rural). I guess I also love food and interiors so some of that may creep in too.
As for learning, am not sure I should get a book, or magazines, or talk to friends (two are serious photographers) or a mixture of all of the above. I did get the hang of playing with depth of field with my SLR and have used that with the new DSLR but I realise there is much more to photography than that. I'm lacking an understanding even of the basic principles of a) what makes a good photo and b) the technical side (although I realise that there is also personal taste and just having an eye for what looks good or interesting).
