I heard he damaged a few vertebrae in his back, i don't think the story of the car on fire is true though.

was doing 220kph when it left the ground, and apparently changed the shape of the back of the car by 6 inches and burst the dampers, although i cant find any write ups to confirm what i have been told, still looking :)

Quote:

The car went on the limiter on the crest and thats 220 KPH!

When we landed we were both winded and the shockers burst thats what caused the fire, the boot and rear quarters are bent down about 6 inches

"It was one small step for mankind"

They say no "pain no gain" and this is true cos i am going to gain a canny bill for the repairs.

The bottom line is we are both going to recover and thats all that matters [:Y:]

On a lighter note; when i was in A+E the doctor came in and asked what had happened.

I explained it went like this;

I was doing 220KPH down the road, he said what type of road, i said single track back road. Then i took off on a jump and flew 60 metres and landed heavily... He said "your in the wrong hospital mate the mental hospital is 5 miles up the road"

One word "WOW"

ah! that like the one on that was on top gear? think that was a Pug though...

(if you have no idea what I am on about - the one of top gear was actually a helium filled rally car)

I have me doubts about some of the stories of what happened. Look at all the marks on the road - in the landing zone. I would have expected many more stories about bent motors at this event. Maybe the 'story' is an accumulation of all that happened at this jump.

Might be, still an impressive jump though :)

There is an American rally driver who currently holds the record for the longest yump (not a SP). It was a staged jump and he used his Subaru WRC to achieve it. There were photos in the motoring magazines a few months back, very impressive.
Just found a link to the video, he planned to jump 150 ft from one ramp to another, he actually jumps 171 ft and just about caught the bottom of his landing ramp.

Americans should stick to sports they know (like driving round an oval). I'm still waiting for the superman seatgrab backflip in a WRC car :/

The above is exactly what happened and is the words of the driver (barry Johnston) of the Impreza wrc car in the picture.

Markko Martin still holds the record i think for the longest jump on a rally, jumping 57 metres on rally Finland in 2003.

I was drinking with one of the other drivers on Saturday night who broke his shafts - again! :nono: I asked if he was p***ed off and he said, "not as much as Barry Johnson!" Now I can see what he meant!

Humph, that's nothing, Bo and Luke Duke would do this in their sleep and without a visit to Hazard County A&E....

without seatbelts and helmets.......
