Hi all

I bought my brand new Nikon D7000 in January this year and almost straight the way felt the images weren't as sharp as from my outgoing Nikon D5100.

So I thought I needed to fine tune my lenses but even after this still felt they weren't as good as they should be. Then I read that images taken through live view are usually sharper which they were by a long long way so I called HDEW (the retailer) who asked me to send the camera to A J Johnstone in Glasgow for a repair. It was returned this week having accepted a fault where it was dismantled and body depths reset and it was recalibrated at a cost to HDEW of £150+.

So I tried some shots in my garden with my 18-105mm, 40mm and 55-200mm lens and felt they weren't as sharp as they should be unless live view is used (never usually use LV). So I needed to carry out more controlled testing but haven't felt like it so last evening shot a few of my grand daughter's soft ride on toy with a sample below - top shot with live view and bottom shot at no fine tuning as any other setting plus or minus was worse.

So should I accept shots through the VF to be far worse than through LV.

Any advice what to do now is appreciated as I am so fed up and not in the best of health to faff around with copious amounts of testing - where's the bloody bin maybe.

KEEP ON CLICKING THROUGH FOR BIGGER

Both 1/4 sec, f7.1 400iso on tripod using remote release.

Shoot the same thing at widest f stop and 100 ISO and repost! I had same trouble with the same body! Mine was back focusing by 20 in fine tune

My d7100 was sharp as a pin shooting through view finder but was out of focus by live view badly! I sold it as I couldn't cure it

The second one seems under exposed and more smudged on bottom of pic, back focussing?. With live view, isn't it usually a larger focussing mode (green square on screen) are you then using spot focussing when using the VF??? so the test maybe inconsistent?

Give Johnstones a ring and see what they say.

Should have gone for a CSC..

:D

It's your fault I went for a D7000 cos you used to rave about them :mooning:

Anyways I keep telling you I'm a poor OAP and can't afford to G.A.S. about like you youngsters.

But do you have any good advice for me - banging on about bloody CSC - I ask you!!!

Same position on tripod, same lighting and same focusing choice AF-S for LV and VF??

I may try HDEW first as they are more cheerful, or even thought about trying Nikon but assume they wouldn't want o know as bought through HDEW? Or would they offer advice?

BUT is it to be expected - sharper through LV than VF????

F***ing cameras are a right pain in the asre :(

Over the years i have found their are some cameras i just cant get on with, others seem to like them and have no problems,i usually end up selling them :)

AF accuracy is also a function of the lens so unless you send the lens away too you can't necessarily expect the AF to be spot on.

use the AF fine tune system. It's there for a reason.

if it is sharper through LV rather than viewfinder it has to be something to do with the mirrorbox mechanism. when in LV the mirror will lock up so you will naturally get sharper images.

I would get that returned for a replacement.

I've tried the fine tuning but the best results are nowhere as near sharp as the LV shots.

ok... I just googled D7000 Mirror slap issue...

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=n...-8&oe=utf-8&gws_rd=cr&ei=6JtDVfnLOo35aPLagcAK

Turns out you are not alone.

PS: does it have a silent mode? If so..turn that on and take some more test shots..basically it dampens the mirror slap. if your images are sharper in that mode, you found the problem. Personally my canons all live in silent mode..apart from my 1Dmkiii...still sounds like a tank.

Wow thanks a lot for your kind help. I've just been in the garden/conservatory taking some more controlled shots. I refuse to print out a test sheet and would rather emulate my real life shots and I can soon tell if they're up to my usual (low :)) standards.

I'm not sure if my camera will allow quiet mode as well as remote release or even quiet mode with delayed shot. I need to take a look at that :)

1/4 second plus mirror slap...

I'd try a faster speed for a start.
I've never noticed OOF shots with any camera I've owned unless it was caused by user error (me!).

I always assume it's me until proven otherwise

PS Just checked all the speeds and the only one anywhere near slow is 1/6th but will bear speed in mind (y)

Mine was ok. Apart from the usual fine tune AF for the lenses it was never an issue. I quite enjoyed my D7000 as long as i didn't need high iso. The 17-55 f2.8 is pretty awesome. :)

This was my findings as well. Actually, I was really disappointed with my d7000 - I should've stuck with my d3100.

Same here and in my case I sold my D5100 - sod it and sod it again

BTW, I'm really pleased with my D5200 :)

I'm a complete bloody idiot :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

It's me not the repaired camera :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

I was not setting the fine tuning right and now I have fine tuned by a number of methods as suggested on other threads I realise all my lenses are spot on  :$

After me DayDreamer is a bloody idiot ------------------------
