hi guys,i`m around the heathrow area next month for 4days and need some help in finding a place to take some photos of the planes coming in to land or take off.

could anyone help ?

so what spot would be best ??,i dont realy know the area.
id like to be nearish to my car and dont realy want to pay for parking but i can if its a must.
is there any spots i can shoot from the car without getting moved on ???

As mentioned above, I would say the best location for you would be:

"the grass area close to Myrtle Avenue at Heathrow has become perhaps the most popular spot at LHR since the closure of the Queens Building viewing area. The spot is perfectly placed on the approach to runway 27L and when this is the landing runway you can get some good approach shots. The area is also the safest in that you will not be bothered by the police or BAA security."

You can check the time table as to when they will be taking off runway 27L or landing here – they switch runways daily at 3pm. Click here

There is nearby street parking or the nearest underground station is Hatton Cross and it will be about a ten minute walk from there.

Use this post code for your Sat Nav: TW14 9QU

If you look on Google Maps (satellite mode)you can see the grassy area at the end of Myrtle Avenue and also how close it is to the end of the Runway 27L Click here.

Hope this will help you plan your visit and look forward to seeing some of your shots.

regards

That is great information, can anybody offer same sort of information for Bournemouth, (My local airport), Southampton quite limited in aircraft type)

Don't know about Bournemouth but there are a couple of spots I know for Southampton. The trouble with Southampton is that the surrounding areas have quite high treelines or its non access stuff. You could try the graveyard - if you google mansbridge road where it runs past the cemetery you can usually park for a bit undisturbed and get some good shots if RUnway 20 is in use. A bit further down there is also a pub called the White Swan with a big car park and a beer garden where you get a reasonably good departure approach view if 02 is in use, but you will have to spend some money in the pub really otherwise they have been known to get a bit funny. Failing that its either the itchen valley country park (you have to pay for parking and its a bit of a trek).

The carpark of the Premier Inn is pretty close to one of the runways I always think the planes are going to land on my car LOL

could you recommend which streets to try parking on please ??

If you followed the link I gave you above and activated Street View you can see that both Myrtle Avenue and Hatton Road plus the surrounding streets appear not to have any parking restrictions. When I last went a couple of years ago I parked at the top of Myrtle Avenue and walked ~100 yards to the grassy area at the bottom of the road.

whats spot D like on that website and is there parking near it?
has anyone got a post code for that area ?

Hi Chris

There's a free bus service that runs around the perimeter of Heathrow. If you park up at Myrtle or pay for the day at Hatton Cross you can just jump on a bus.You will see where the various other togs are standing if you keep your eyes peeled. There's plenty of bus stops to jump on and off from.
Hatton Cross bridge is also another easy to get to place.

Cheers
Gary

Be very careful taking photos on airport.
You don't have the so called rights you have outside the airport while you are on the perri roads, or the roads around the terminals. The ACPO guidelines do not apply.
The BAA who own the airport are apt to call police when there's a collection of photogs gathering, and as you don't fit into the 3 categories of having access, you will probably end up being asked to leave.
Myrtle Ave is your best bet to be honest.

heres afew i got from the petrol station on the south road.
all was good untill they changed runway, what runway was they using so i can plan my next trip ?

If you were at the petrol station then they were taking off from 27L in your shots above.

They swap runways at 3pm so that the same people aren't subjected to the noise all day long. The exception is that they never take off from 09L (ISTR it's called the Cranford Agreement or some such).

They also swap ends (ie change from 09 to 27) when the wind changes direction of course... ;-)

As I said in a previous post, you can check what runway they're using on www.flightradar24.com - zoom in on Heathrow and it's obvious...

Nice pics BTW!

Cheers,

Jez.

that explaines it,as they changed bang on 3pm !

BTW,sorry,whats that stand for ??

Cool. Cheers for the link. What about a pub that's good for a nice lunch and how long do you think it would take a well fit lad to walk the perimeter starting and finishing at Hatton Gdn. tube?
