A friend of my wife has a 14 year old daughter, At school they were asked to organise themselves into groups and to think of an idea to raise money for charity.

her group said they'd organise car washing in the school grounds, H&S vetoed the idea though, they said the kids couldn't have a bucket of hot water in case one of them fell in it :bonk:

You can imagine it can't you, 3 go round the front of the car to collect the money, then, where's Rachel AAARRGG she's drowned in the bucket:cuckoo:

It's no wonder kids are leaving school with no idea how the world works if nobody lets them think for themselves any more:help:

WHAT?? seriously?. That sucks

It's no wonder kids are leaving school with no idea how the world works if nobody lets them think for themselves any more:help:

That is why my kids are getting home tutored

It's not Health and Safety , it's useless ****** parents sueing the schools because little johnny hurt himself with a pencil.

H & S is all about "Significant Risks" , it's not about protecting the schools insurance comapny from money grabbing ********

In the paper today was a story about a 73 year old caretaker who had fallen off a 6ft stepladder, he said it wasn't his fault as he had not been trained to use it:bang:.

It's looking like he'll get £38K damages .

Health and Safety makes my job so much harder than it has to be. I work in or around 800to 1000 ton power presses. Years ago it wasn't so bad but one of my so called workmates decided to be lazy and lean on the press tool in the press as the press was cycled. The tip of his finger got squashed to about 0.5mm and torn off. He was standing upright before the press cycled but would have been crouching or bending over at 90 degrees long before his finger got trapped.
A couple of days after his accident, the HSE came in to investigate and I saw the look on there faces when they realised he would have been bending over long before his finger became trapped and couldn't work out why he did what he did. I was so sure he would not get a payout as it was down to his own negligence. As it was the company paid him £32,000 which included loss of earnings whilst he was off. He was moved to a different department when he came back to work, but with a lower earning potential their his solicitor was pushing for £92,000 which included loss of future earnings. The company decided to move him back into the department, hence his lower pay out. The company then had to install better guarding so that the press could not cycle whilst the gaurds were open. Problem is the bloke is just as daft to have another accident somehow.

This will give you an idea what a power press does. Imagine getting a limb caught in there.

This is in China by the way who obviously have no HSE.

in the paper today the local mayor has been banned from having that tiny flag on the front of her car as (and i quote from the HSE people) "it may fall off and hurt someone".

Are they SERIOUS??? H+S gone mad!!!:bang:

I wish you were all joking but I realize that is not the case:shrug::bang::shake:

Health & Safety has a purpose. Now can anyone tell me what it is other than to prevent idiots with no common sense hurting themselves?

To keep pencil pushing morons in a job that would other wise have nothing to do.

I'm a Health & Safety Consultant, you should really do a Risk assessment before calling me a moron on a public forum

:nono: Did he really call you a moron? From reading his post it's not even clear he's referring to health and safety consultants. Interesting the way you interpreted his post though ;)

I have to deal with H&S everyday at work, and its absolutely mad, I know it assumes that no-one has any common sense but what I dn't like is that everyone is vicariously liable. Why should a company get the wrap for someone's own stupidity and lack of not following training?

I think the problem is that there's a world of difference between working with highly dangerous machines where a second's inattention or stupidity could have catastrophic results, and everyday objects which just need a little bit of care and common sense. Legislation is a blunt instrument which doesn't differentiate between the 2 extremes and 'rules is rules'.

I was once refused a jug of hot water to warm my baby grandson's bottle in the restaurant of a well-known department store - on grounds of H&S. So I asked for a pot of tea but asked them to leave the teabag on a saucer because I didn't want it to be too strong.

 It's a mad mad world!!

Please don't tell me you still bestow your custom on that store??

The problem is that people use the H&S excuse whenever they're scared of litigation, or when their insurers won't like it, or just don't want the bother of dealing with the minimal safeguards necessary.

H&S the way the HSE deal with it, and HSE the way that schools in particular apply it is very very different.

my company is really going to town on this, were all wrapped up in cotton wool and not allowed to think for ourselves or use our instincts or commonsense, all under the guise for our protection, ive managed 30 plus years in heavy engineering without an accident so i dont need my mob telling me how to be safe, the bad thing is if we see any person acting unsafely we are supposed to shop them to managers,no chance,,,,

When people don't want to allow something they often blame some bureaucratic rules rather than admit the real reason. 'Sorry mate not me it's the rules' sounds better than 'I won't allow this because...'

Back to my post on power presses and lack of H&S in other countries, several years ago a Jaguar engineer told us he was in Japan looking at a set of press tools that had been built in Japan. A larger press tool than that in the video I posted. Every time a panel was hit in the press tool it went in dry but had a dab of oil on it after. He asked for another panel to be hit, again it went in dry, and finished with a dab of oil on it. Mystified, he asked for another panel to be hit. This time he stood as close as he dared and watched carefully. As the press started to cycle over, he saw a head pop up and a hand reach into the die pitting a dab of oil on the panel (to lubricate and stop the metal splitting).
In a panic he called for them to stop. He told them the man could be seriously injured or killed. Their reply, "Oh that's ok we'll just get someone else to do it".

We used to have press brakes and smaller power presses. gave up on the power presses because the H&S was too much work. Wanted the flywheels taken off regularly for bearing inspection and other nonsense. Then there was the compressor... The inspection and certification they wanted on that was so expensive it was cheaper to buy a new one every 3 years. Watched that video. No wonder we couldn't compete with Chinese imports!
