Heat

Ouch!

3 1/2 hours on a flight South.
Where to ? Our friends are about to fly to Pula, Croatia where there's a severe heat warning. It's 33ºC today with 34ºC forecast for tomorrow and it's always a couple of degrees higher than the official forecast. That's the shade temperature, though. We're going there in a few weeks so I hope it's cooled down.26ºC-28ºC is ok.

I mentioned in my post ..two back..that we were woken up at 2.35am yesterday morning by a very loud clap of thunder. Just that one.

The lightning struck a house about 1 1/2 miles away. There are two clips. The first one, in real time, and the second, slowmo. In the second one you can 'hear' what I think was the positively-charged upward streamer from the house as it generates a wide range of frequencies and the high-frequency sounds (hiss and crackle or similar) are heard when the lightning is close. It's generated by the negatively-charged lightning bolt from the cloud as it gets to within 50m of the ground causing a channel for the main strike to discharge down. We don't see this but the downward discharge. I've seen photos of these 'streamers' on top of buildings. What sends up a streamer to meet the main charge is random..not always the tallest structure.

In case anyone wonders why a positive charge reaches up from the ground when Earth is ,at the surface, negatively-charged here's the explanation. Copy/paste.

"While the Earth's surface generally carries a negative charge, lightning streamers from the ground are positively charged due to a process called electrostatic induction.During a thunderstorm, the negatively charged bottom of a cloud repels electrons in the ground, leaving behind a positive charge that seeks to neutralise the cloud's charge."

A streamer caught on video. End of video..

Back to Crete again. I spend most of the time in the water rather than on the beach so keep reasonably cool. Car and room have AC, bars have ice cold water when needed as well as shade!
