@Cobra Just in case, reads as per advert on FB.

Anyone lost a bird or prey in the Harlow area? Looks like some kind of eagle when I checked on Google .
It's a display bird as its feet were ringed and part of a leather strap was attached.

Actually looking at the two side by side looks to be a completely different species as Stanley has a white tail :(

Yeh Matt two diferent birds. On another note this was posted up by "Lostbox" on facebook, I would urge anybody that does use FB to like their page and follow if they have not already. You will be surprised at the amount of stuff that does get lost, from camera gear as well as peoples pet dogs etc.Equally there are quite a few success stories published.

Will check the page out...

As some guys on that FB page are saying, looks like a Harris Hawk by the colouring, but to me the head/beak look too big, but maybe not. Nothing mentioned on a couple of local zoo FBs, although Whipsnade did have a falcon go missing for a week a while back and didn't publish it.

Tis a female Harris Hawk, not necessarily a display bird they are used for hunting rabbits and pheasants too etc etc.
And they used to be ringed by law,
but that has now been relaxed to native species only.
One ring is probably an IBR registered ring and the other a breeders ring.

@new2me Neil IFF membership is moderated,
we don't let just anyone in you know :p
Besides that HH has two feet ;)

:D I just skipped through the thread and thought there were three of them missing. I did wonder if yourself or someone else might be on there already

Did that thread not say there were 3 birds missing? 2 females and a male?

Indeed but the mature mother has the foot missing the siblings are intact.

Young HH have white bars on their chest until they moult out,
That is an adult female :)
She also says that the young are untrained, I suspect, and reading between the lines of the thread,
that they don't even have "furniture" fitted"

Thanks for the explanation Chris (y)

As you can see I know nothing about these things :)

Hope it gets caught. The jesses on it's legs are used to tether the bird on it's perch, but could easily snag in a tree.

Someone on FB says it's been spotted in the area for months. Maybe the handler just trusts it to do it's own thing from time to time.

Pretty sure I saw this same bird in a tree in the carpark at my work months ago (Harlow)

Neil, they get lost due to poor weight control and management.
Being Central / south American species that are very much opportunist feeders,
they can live quite happy here as "feral's " killing rabbits mice birds and carrion.
They are one of the most popular and cheap birds of prey flown in this country,
and also the most commonly lost.

There are actually a couple ( that I know of) small feral colonies in the UK ;)
