Heads up: 2TB external usb2 drive for 56.80 delivered.

Thanks for the heads-up Mark - very tempted - has good user reviews on another usually cheaper (but not this time) well known outlet...

I can vouch for these as well, I have the 1tb version for backups

Solid as a Rock

great for back ups but it is very slow, you can not work with RAW from this drive.... with out going mental. That said it's a cracker for the money for the right purpose

Wow... I remember when 40gb drives cost 100's of pounds... 2 TB for 56.80 is very good value for money!

Me too !

And these drives certainly are good value for money, maybe not workable as direct drive access or a scratch disk but ideal, as mentioned, for backups.

And from experience Western Digital have superb customer service when it comes to their drives.

For those of us on a limited budget for these kind of things then a big thumbs up from me.

Pfft! I had a job in computer retail in the mid-90s.

The very first thing I sold, in September 1993, was a 1 gigabyte Seagate external SCSI drive. The price - £995.00, plus VAT.

:D

Yes - I agree - good value and really only suitable as backup (as per the OP post) although there are other options - I use both a NAS (network assisted storage) box, and, a cheaper/much faster, Sumvision eSATA HD docking station that has SATA and USB interfacing (has CF/SD card slots). Just literally drop a bare HD into the docking station, backup, remove and store somewhere safe!
Extremly fast using the SATA interface (assuming your PC has external SATA connectivity - most do).

I suspect there will be more USB 2.0 bargains as suppliers clear the decks ready for USB 3.0 stuff.

USB is not that slow, 20-25mb/sec is what you should be getting. Ok not lightning but should be fine for general work/RAW's. You won't get much faster off a laptop drive.
