I decided to step into the world of Photography and i thought at the end of October i would pick up my Camera. I had opted for a Canon 40D.

Now.............

After reading some bits on here and reading several articles and On-Line Reviews i have decided to Shove the money in a bank ( Not an Icelandic one ) and contemplate what my next move is going to be.

The choice is now between a Canon 40D - a Canon 50D - And a Nikon D300, i just cant seem to make my mind up ? This is where ive got to -

I like the 40D because of the features and the price, held it in the shop, fits in my hand like a glove.

I like the 50D because once again the features, the 3" 920k pixel LCD, the choice of lenses, and its a Canon. Only thing is........Ive read it has some metering issues.

Now i come to the Nikon D300, i like everything ive read about this camera, cant find anything i dont like.

What do i do, i need to save a bit more money so ive got a bit of time. Anyone help me sort this out ?

Which ever one i choose, its mainly going to be used for landscapes / nature / skys etc. Thanks people.

Canon 50d

You can't go wrong from what I have read about it.

40D If you have reservations about any metering issues (not up to speed on that, just heard it was a better upgrade ie better 40d to 50d than the 30d was to a 40d)

As for a Nikon :bonk:, well :canon:

I have to say that if the metering issues ive read about about are unfounded, im gonna go with the Canon 50D. :)

I've not had any metering issues with my 50D or 40D or 30D. All are great cameras - go and hold some and play with them. Then you can make your decisions.

im gonna go with the Canon 50D. :)

Look, here is a no lose deal, I'll make this guarantee to you.

Buy the 50D and if you don't like it you can send it to me in return for a 30D which you WILL love.:D

Sound fair ?????

:thinking::thinking::thinking:

If you already have canon lenses:
If you are on a budget, get the 40D, you will not be disapointed. If there is a specific feature of the 50D you are interested in, then spring for the 50D.

If you have Nikon lenses go for the D300.

If you have no lenses - harder choice, I have not used it but I hear the D300 is superb, but frankly I do not think that in terms of image performance you will be able to distinguish between the D300 and 50d or even 40d. Deciding factor, for me, would be the handling - what do you find easiest to use.

Any of those cameras will be great. 50D is quite a bit more than the 40D though.

What is your budget for lenses on top of the cameras, or do you already have them ?

The camera is only half the package, it's the lenses (and the user) which really make the difference and these (the lenses) can be very expensive.

OK read reviews, look at the plus points, and negative ones of each camera. But Please go and handle each camera.

You may find something about the way one of the cameras handles that makes it the camera for you. It's really the only way to find out these things. Try taking a memory card along with you and take a few pictures with each camera. have a look and see waht you think. Probably you'll not see a great deal of difference.

If you can hold out that long Focus is coming up at the end of February. Both Canon and Nikon are on the exhibitors list for 2009.

Thanks for all the feed-back, the general consensus seems to be go feel and have a play with all of them. Sounds like very good advice to me, so im going to go pester the poor sales people in various outlets today. Once again, Many Thanks for the help.

I dont have any lenses at present so its going to be bought in stages. I intend on buying the camera OR camera kit depending on lens supplied with it and building the camera up slowly when funds allow.

I would go for the 50D or D300 as it’s up to day technology so should last you a few years before you might need to change.
You might get a better deal with the Nikon as the price keeps on dropping.
Or just hang on a bit longer till the D700 drops in price.

Think about the system you're buying into as much - if not more - than the actual camera. All the cameras you've mentioned are superb and will deliver great images in the right hands. But images of ... what?

If you're an outdoorsy type (wildlife, birds, aircraft, motorsport etc) then I'd say you should bias your preference towards Canon because you'll have a bigger range of quality telephotos to choose from.

If you're an indoorsy type the you should bias your preference towards Nikon because their flash system is easier to manage.

Definitely the right thing to do.

Then come back to ask any points that may need calrifying.

Good luck.

If you have no lenses at the moment out of the Canon bodies I would be swaying much more towards the 40D and some money left over for a better lens. Lenses have much more effect on image quality than the body.

I paid a camera supplier a visit today, i had a play with the Canon 40D and also the 50D, I like the size of it and it fits more than snug in my hand. I took a couple of photies with the 50D and had a view of them on the LCD. I am seriously impressed with this camera, but that doesnt say a lot.

I am now of the opinion that im gonna go with the 50D, i Just like it - LOTS. Im not in love or anything like that but its a close thing...........

Now all i have to do is save the rest of the money and i'll be there

Sounds like a good move! I'm sure you'll be able to snap up more than a few bargains lenses-wise here to expand your kit :)
