...on Friday, weather permitting, and hoping to get some good shots. I'm planning on just taking my D90 with 70-300 on. Am I likely to need anything shorter than the 70? It's no bother to take my 18-105 too, but if I don't need it then I'd rather leave it at home. My original plan was to take the 70-300 on my D90 and my 18-105 on my D40, but that just seemed like totaly overkill

So, will I need anything shorter than 70? Or even longer than 300? (not that I have anything longer )

Also, any general info on Marwell? I've been to a few zoos etc before. Twycross was alright, but Monkey World really annoyed me, too much chain link all over the place :D.

Whenever I go to zoo's, I take my 70-300mm as well, never found the need for anything less - but I always carry my 35mm just in case.

Never been to Marwell either, so can't give any advice - it's meant to be like Woburn Safari park isn't it?

Never really been big on zoos, last one I went to I think I was 90% with a tele zoom, 5% with a fast prime and the other 5% i could have used either :D

The fast prime was essential for some of the indoor areas. I'm pretty sure out of the 50 people in the monkey area, and the 20 people with cameras I was the only one there getting useable shots :D

If marwell have indoor stuff i'd definitely be packing something fast

I don't know Marwell, but I go to the Cotswold Wildlife Park occasionally and always take my 90mm 2.8 macro for the dimly-lit reptile house - have got a few nice shots of lizards etc with it. Now I have a nifty fifty as well I will also take that with me next time as an alternative low-light lens.

I regular visit marwell, I tend to use a 70-300 90% of the time but the other 10% i will use a 50mm prime as some of the the indoor enclosures require a fast lens with a closer minimum focus than my 70-300 can offer. There are also a few oppurtunities for wider shots around marwell house which you could be achieved with a 18-105 although I tend to pack light and leave my 18-105 at home.

Hope this helps you :)

theres some good oportunities to be had at marwell - particularly the walk through tropical rain forest, lemur , wallaby, and golden lion tamarind enclosures, and the red pandas assuming they are up their tree.

plus of course the antelope , rhino, zebra etc in the enclosures that are easy to shoot into.

the only place where chain link etc can be a pain is with the big cats - but the enclosures are large enough that you can zoom through the wire.

its also worth going to any keeper talks etc that are running as the keepers are well used to photographers and will always do their best to get animals into position where they can be photographed at feeding time etc.
