Anyone else suffer with headaches after looking at computer screens for a while?

It's a real pain when I've got a lot of photo editing to do, guess its the concentrating and the glare, but wish there was screens you can get that aren't so harsh on the eyes! Is there?

No tablets seem to get rid of the pain either :bang:

Try to prop them up better so that they don't fall!

:coat:

over due for an eye test? taking regular breaks?

screen too bright? or got glare from another light source?

screen too close? not at the correct height etc? also posture and desk/chair height correct?

Fine with mine, it`s just a few of the idiots that have an internet connection which give me a headache

I used to get them. Screen was on its way out! New screen fixed it. Not had it with LCD unless the brightness has been turned up too far.

Shiny screen? I get this at work on the Macs... my eyes are constantly shifting focus from what's being displayed to the reflection of the room behind. Gives me wicked headaches.

I've been using computers for over 30 years. For the last ten years a typical day would involve around 8-14hours using my laptop. No headaches here or any other computer related complaints other than RSI, which I mitigate by alternating the hand I use for my touchpad.

A couple of years ago I did begin to suffer eye strain - not headaches - but that was sorted with the purchase of some cheap, supermarket reading glasses. Posture, stress, lighting and eyesight are all things to consider, as well as the equipment itself and simple failure to take a break from the screen. Making a cup of tea is a good opportunity to gain some relief on several fronts.

Like others have said, there are a few things to consider changing/adjusting. I think I'm due an eye test, judging by the number remarks I get about my soft photos :D

Eye test time. Can sit 6 inches from my laptop all day now with my new goggles, the old ones I don't even know how I saw where I was going!

Definitely go to your opticians for an eye test. You can get them for free sometimes, give it a google.

6 inches, some folks just love to brag

I was wondering what was used to take the measurement. It might have been as close as 4". :D

No tablets seem to get rid of the pain either :bang:

[fanboi on] try an Ipad , they are the best tablet out there, they are GGGGreat and won't give you eyes strain or anything, an apple a day keeps the doctor away.... oh wait you mean pain killing tablets... arse [fanboi off]

eyestrain pain is nerve thing so none of the antinflamatory type painkillers (such as ibruprofen) will work - you need the sort that block the neuroreceptors like paracetamol or codeine

you definitely also ought to get an eye test , although focussing at one distance for a long time can cause strain even when your sight is 20/20 - the only answer to that is not to look at a screen so much and/or to take regular breaks.

You also might want to check on your posture , workstation set up etc as neck muscle strain from awkward positioning can also manifest as a headache

Have you tried using different eyes? You'll have to wait for eye transplant technology, but once it's here, and obviously at a price point where it's tempting, or at least affordable, you'll probably notice less headaches.

If it still happens, it could be a problem with the ocular nerve, and one will assume that since it was still happening, that a future where eye transplants are commonplace does not necessarily mean that one can transplant a complete ocular system.

In which case, I would recommend waiting longer for that technology to become available.

Hope this helps.

How are you sleeps?

I found if I didn't sleep very well or was very tired continuously for a few days, I'd get a slight headache while using screens. My solution would be to go to sleep early that day, that usually solves my headaches.

Thanks everyone for the responses.

Generally sleep ok and get enough hours, so going to take the advice and get an eye test - haven't had one for quite a few years now so is overdue.

Just wondering what is the general opinion on Imacs vs laptop screens and monitors when it comes to glare and how they suit your eyes?

I used to get headaches after being at my desk at work up until 3 weeks ago when I decided to have an eye test. I now wear glasses at work... no more headaches :0)

Get an eye test!

seriously thats way too close (both 6 and 14 inches).. that must give you alsorts of eye strain.. 18-28" is the "recommended" H&S.

Thanks for that!

I just had to measure and I am 30 ins away from my screen!

Well it's a big thing and covered by the Heath and Safety at work act (Display screen regs) so if anyone is employed and regularly getting these problems then normally your entitled to a few freebies such as eye tests etc but more importantly a workplace assessement, eg bad reflections etc in the screen. This is assuming your not self employed in which case theres a few simple steps.

1. eye test. Its the first most simple step to check whether its your eyes or your equipment.

2. Take regular breaks, make it a habit.

3. If you are getting reflections on your screen, move your workstation to a point where you don't get any, simples :-)

I changed at home from a pc laptop to a macbook and thought that there would be problems with the shiny screen but it's fantastic. I use it mainly in a room where there's a large amount of light all day streaming through a patio door to 6 x 6 foot but it's perpendicular to the door so no reflections.

You should be having bi-annual (at least) eye tests if you're regularly working at a computer.

My eyesight has deteriorated every time.. :|

Every six months? I'd have thought every couple of years was sufficient. Or are you confusing with biennial plants, that flower every two years?

I'm old enough now that my eyesight is improving with every eye test, a decade ago I was -7.5 dipotres in both eyes, now down to -6.75.

(could argue too tired to be working at a computer screen :D )

When I was younger I did suffer a bit with CRT screens, but that was back when we used portable televisions as computer monitors and the computer modulated the signal onto UHF channel 36.

My eyesight has deteriorated every time.. :|

so is what we're saying is that regularly experiencing your good 6 inches makes you go blind ?
