Head-on shots

At Brands yesterday, it struck me that I was struggling to find head-on shots. I could have panned all day, but who wants to do that? Obvious places seem to be either littered with fences, or a bit too far away.

My main lens is a 70-200 f/2.8 and I have a 1.7x TC. Even with that I seem to find I could use a little more length.

You are generally not going to get a head-on shot without a fence unless you are in a grandstand. However they do make for some good shots, particularly at bike racing. The first corner at Croft is fantastic for this, very close to the action even if it is through a fence, although for a big event expect to share this spot with a lot of people.

Fences can be a real nightmare, but these were taken with a 300mm and 2x TC on the outside of druids, using AV (aperture priority) as you're not worried too much about shutter speeds

Would have to disagree, depends what lens you have and whether you can focus beyond the fence.

I manage alright with Croft's fences using a 70-200mm f/4, it just depends how the distances are all laid out (subject to fence distance as long as possible and fence to camera distance as short as possible).

Aye, but I meant there would still be a fence there - since the OP was apparently concerned about their presence.

So you're at 600mm for those? I can get 340mm max.

I don't mind them being there, but I'd rather they weren't! I suspect with a longer focal length it'd be easier.

Yep 600mm + 1.3 crop. Have you used the switch which limits the focus range. On the 300 there's 3 settings, the one I use is 6.4m to inf. so that It removes the fence all together.

I've got a 2.5m to infinity switch. That could help.
