Well I've gone and done it again, confused myself by doing to much research.

Basically we are going to Canada for 3 weeks in July and I am going to take my D300 for wildlife and my F100 for landscapes but I want a decent lens for the F100. I had narrowed it down to the Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4 or the Nikon 16-85mm but then I started to think about primes....aarrgghh.:bang:

Any suggestions, bearing in mind I am after top quality, pin-sharp images, budget....mmm up to £350 but I'd rather it was less.

Cheers folks

Andy

Oh and I don't mind secondhand.

Not sure where you are in Cheshire Andy, but I've got a Nikon 16-85 you are welcome to borrow to see if it suits you before buying one.

I used it on my D300 and was happy with results before I moved to FF.

I'm in Didsbury, South Manchester.

Before anyone complains....I'm not looking to sell the lens or trying to circumvent classifieds....just offering to loan it.

Are both of those not crop lenses? Won't the vignette like hell on the F100?

Of course they are, what a blithering idiot I am.....still, at least it takes them out of the equation.

Steve, thanks for the offer but as the extremely wise Jim has stated not good on my F100
OK, looking like a prime is the way forward.

I'd like to think that nobody would be either stupid enough to miss the word BORROW or petty minded enough to think you were up to something Steve...

All academic anyway, in light of following posts, but still a helpful and generous offer.

Extremely wise?!?!?! I am putting that one on my CV. And tombstone!

Andy, I have some lenses left over from using Nikon that you could borrow if you want, they are not doing anything at the moment,
Nikon 24mm 2.8 prime
Sigma 24-70 2.8

Both full frame.

Mart

I've got a nice Nikon 20-35mm f2.8 you can borrow if you like Andy, will work like a charm on the F100 or if you want a 28mm 2.8 prime you can borrow that instead.

Ignore my post, I'd borrow Mart's instead

Yet again the generosity of the folks in this musty little section has amazed me. Thanks for all the offers of loaners I really do appreciate them and after doing a bit more research (yes I know it was research that caused the near explosion of my balding pate but this time I was less stressed) and I think I'm going to go with the Nikon 24mm f2.8 (couple of nice ones at vintage classic camera for about £160) and save the rest of the cash for film to take with me and to pay for devving when I get back.

Mart, it's very kind of you to offer a loan mate and its made me think that it might be a good idea to arrange a north west meet sometime, there seem to be a few of us fairly local and maybe we can get some of the southern softies up to Chester as well.

Of course I may change my mind again later......

Andy

The people here are boss! A northern meet you say? Chester you say? On a Sunday you say?! (Sunday is my day off).

I say all of these things and many more........ I shall have a little think and maybe a North west Meet thread will magically appear.

Andy

Sigma 24mm f2.8 Superwide
Cosina 19-35mm

Both cheap as chips and great quality for the money.IMO.

Another vote for the Cosina 19-35mm I picked one up for £55 and it gives great results on my F100. The guy I bought from used it on his D700 to good effect. There will a visually be a multiplier effect on you D300.

If you could make it after my final exams that would be grand

I received a Nikon 24mm f/2.8 AF for Christmas and it's a solid little lens. The 24mm lens and my Nikon 50mm f/1.8 AF make a great pair of primes for travelling as they're small, lightweight, and have the same filter thread size of 52mm. If only my Samyang 85mm f/1.4 were 52mm as well, I'd really be happy...

I'm sure we can hang fire until you're ready mate. I was thinking about late May.

My thoughts exactly, small and light and perfect for a trip to Canada.

I was thinking about late May.

I'll be keeping an eye out for this possible meet as I'm back in Wakefield (W Yorks) for a family wedding at the end of May and a TP meet may be just what I need to remain sane!:D
Suspect it may prove too far away for me...we'll see what happens.

Sorry Andy for taking your thread off topic.....permission given to put back on track:D

That would be great if we could time it for when you were over.

Sounds good to me,
Andy if you want to borrow a 24mm 2.8 and try before you buy one, just give me a shout.

If we have a meet in Chester, and the weather looks good, then I'll bring out some wet plate kit for a play :D

Don't have exact dates to hand atm Andy but it is the last week in May.

Mart, that'll save me bringing any kit then!!:D

Might only bring a Box Brownie for wedding shots.....one thing for sure, I'd be unique! :D:D:D

Late May will probably be right in the middle of them, will let you know when they are as soon as i can.

Well if it was me I would look at the Nikon 35-70mm f2.8 lens an old one but good but a little rare to get hold of.

The other is the 35-105mm f3.5 - 4.5, I use it on my D700 and F4/FA/FM etc and really like it plus it would be less weight than the 35-70.

Just a thought.

Will also keep an eye on the Chester meet :)

Thanks for your thoughts Nick, I'm thinking that 35mm is not quite as wide as I would like so I've gone and bought a Nikon 24mm f2.8, should be here next week in time to take to Edinburgh next weekend for a practice run.

Andy

Yay.... a meetup somewhere in NW would be great.

I might be up for a Chester meet as well. I'm away for the first week of the May but anything after is good for me!

Cheers
Steve

I'd really like to make it 'oop north' for this and this is in no way me trying to arrange things my own way :whistling: but if you're thinking of a Saturday in May, the 5th is a bank holiday weekend so travel will be expensive, the 11th is cup final day the 25th is another bank holiday weekend so that pretty much leaves the 18th :D:

Im thinking maybe the first weekend in June might be better. Ill start a thread later today and we will have a wide ranging and informative discussion.
