OK, I've spent hours poring over reviews and reports and I've now reached the stage where nothing makes sense anymore.

What I need is a replacement for my Nikon 18-135mm lens but I also need the following :

An FX lens so I can use it on my F401 and F3.
An aperture ring so I can use it on my F3.
Sharpness as I do a lot of still life/close up work.
Under £300 (don't mind second hand).
Build quality must be good and solid.
Focal length doesn't need to be wider than 16-24mm or zoom to more than 70-135mm.

I don't need it to be particularly fast in focusing. F2.8 would be useful but not necessary throughout the zoom range.

So I don't want much do I? Any suggestions based on personal use would be much appreciated.
I put this in the equipment section earlier put to very little avail so I thought that the knowledable filmies would be a better bet.

Cheers

Andy

Not sure you'll find a lens that'll serve as a replacement for your 18-135 as FF lenses, esp. older ones, will tend to start at 28 or 35.

I'd look at:
35-70/2.8 -- likely a little over your £300 budget
28-105/3.5-4.5 ('macro')

The 28-200s D and G (though the latter wouldn't have the aperture ring) seem to get good reviews for a 'do it all' lens so might be worth a try.

Looking at the 24-85/2.8-4, which might fit your desired fl a bit more, but these seem to go for more than the 35-70/2.8 :s

Mmm 24-85mm might be workable. Thanks Andrew I'll take a look.

Sigma 24-70mm?

The older version has an aperture ring though newer dont.

Thanks Danny, I'll have a look.

I use the older Sigma 24-70 f2.8 and I'd recommend it for your use. If you aren't so fussed about paying for f2.8 which isn't exceptionally sharp on that lens anyway, Nikon have an old 24-50 f3.3-4.5 (or someting like that) out there which I used to use and thought was pretty good for the price I paid. Both lenses I use(d) on both digital and film no problem, my film SLR being an F801, so like you, aperture ring is a must.

Thanks for the info, I used to have the old Sigma 24-60mm f2.8 which was a really beautiful lens, pin sharp, so I will have a look at the 24-70mm as well.

My 24-70 has the app ring and is extremely sharp - the sole reason why I didnt get the nikon version.
