.... , yeah, of course he didn't!!

If you are caught doing something like that just admit you should not have done it, instead of trying to justify it with such a pathetic excuse.

Is he suggesting if it had not been as old it would be alright to do what he did?

It matters not how old the building is/was, how would he like it if random people decided to 'mark' his property (home, car, bike etc)

At 27 he should know right from wrong......frankly I hope, as an example, he sees the full force of Italian Law thrown at him. That is the message that not needs to go out, not the fullsome (lawyer advised?) apology he has made, hoping to 'get away without any sanctions'

I'm prepared to bet two of my pounds that he didn't write that letter of opology.

Agreed!

The phrasing alone had a 'court testimony ' feel to it! That is one reason IMO he needs his day in court to be cross examined!

Afteral, if as I mentioned he found the person who had defaced his property would he not want the culprit prosecuted?

What people like Ivan Dimitrov need, in my opinion, is six months, on his own, in a bare cell. At least it would provide him with a chance to consider his general behaviour. That he won't get this, is the biggest problem facing modern democracies.

My opinion, for what it's worth, is that too many countries have turned prisons into an expensive luxury and having done so, are inclined to use them for the fewest offenders. If prisons were much less attractive, prison sentences would become more effective, and the reduction of costs would permit their benefits to be extended to more of our troublesome fellows. I appreciate that attempting to alter the attitudes of offenders by making them uncomfortable is frowned upon but none of the current approaches have done anything to reduce re-offending, so far as I can see.

I certainly agree with you here for sure!

Would think he will be prosecuted in order for the message to get out to others, maybe a few months in a bare cell with some chalk to pass the time, then wipe it off before release day.

Two of your pounds, Graham.? I'd go further. if it were me betting. I'd bet our home along with all our savings and investments ...:D. I could then buy one of those Mercs or BMWs that turn up at our hotel here in Italy...one of the Mercs was listed at (Google) £108,000 to top of the range £320,000.

.

Exactly and you know how he could pass some time. ? Checking in a dictionary for the meaning of all those terms used by a solicitor that his parents ,no doubt, contacted to write 'his' apology...:)

What a total piece of scum, give him the full beans, large fine and time inside. Sounds like a Bulgarian name to me. Who in their right mind would consider doing that to such an iconic ancient monument?

Why was he sightseeing the Colosseum then, if he didn't realise it was an ancient monument? Ridiculous argument, never mind that vandalism is vandalism wherever it is done.

Is he saying that he is very happy scratching his name on younger buildings…

It took me a while but,yes..you're right,he's Bulgarian,a fitness instructor who lives in Bristol. It's an Italian solicitor who wrote his apology. It's probably a copy/paste used for others who are similarly culturally illiterate.

I wonder what the Swiss girl's excuse will be...

Chop his hand off!!!!
(Im in italy as well at the moment)
ciao

When I visited the Colosseum I was awestruck, just standing back and looking at it, realising it was over 2,000 years old, actually brought a tear to my eye.

Nearly 2,000 years old. It was finished in 80 CE/AD. Still an impressive structure, however old it is!

300 gladiators? Thats even worse. This guys really isnt very clever, whats next, a picnick in Jurassic Park?

I'm sure you know... "Gladiator" was Romans and the like and "300" (which that quote/clip is from) was about the Greeks fighting the Persians :D

Spartans - Greece as a unified nation didn't exist back then!

Spartans - Greece as a unified nation didn't exist back then!

I used "Greeks" rather than Spartans as it wasn't only Spartans at the battle. As you may know. The 300 weren't the only ones there.

You may also know that the Spartans and the others in what is now Greece did very likely see themselves as Spartan (or other) first but having a common Hellenes background but AFAIK we've never historically called them that. "Greek" originates from the Latin and is I think more widely used not just here in the UK.

Maybe it's like debating if it was the English or the British who took part in a battle or the army of Albion.

And a PS.
I think I remember that the use of Hellenes came after the Trojan war which predates the time of 300, so by the time of 300 there'd been a recognition of I suppose some sort of belonging and a wider nationhood for quite some time. Unless I'm wrong :D

I would hope so.

Italy though, you know , its where the Mafia live? You doot your horn at the wrong person in Italy and you end up wearing concrete boots and taking swimming lessons, these people clearly are imbeciles. Have they never watched The Sopranos?

It will only get worse. We don't promote culture much beyond the moment. It's probably something most kids have seen on social media.

"The lawyer for Mr Dimitrov, Alexandro Maria Tirelli, told the BBC: "We have already formulated a plea bargain request.

"The boy will certainly benefit from a suspended sentence, the fact is heinous but not serious."

Does the lawyer think that refering to a 27yr old man as a "boy" will result in pity taken on him during sentencing? Also stating it wasn't a serious offence - I doubt either will help.
