HDR?

Please excuse my ignorance but what does HDR mean?

Many thanks
Rachel

It's High Dynamic Range. Imagine you have a scene with lots of shadows but also lots of bright areas. You could expose for the shadows but then you'd blow out the bright areas. Or you could expose for the bright areas, but then all the shadows would tend to black with no detail. Now imagine you took two photos, one to get the shadow detail and another for the bright areas, then combined the two photos to give the best of both worlds - a picture with detail in the shadows and in the bright areas. HDR is a way to do essentially this, but it's a little more complex than the description I just gave!
