Hey everyone...

Wanted to have a go at this HDR stuff the other day (btw, if your not a fan of HDR, the back button on your browser is much quicker than replying to this thread...)

Now all i seem to end up with using QTPFSGUI (recommended a few times for OS X) is a "Milky" Image...

Any help would be majorly appreciated...

Your final image does not look like it's a HDR image at all :shrug: The 2nd image of your bracketed set looks a better overall image IMO ,what program did you use to process this ?

Maybe at least rotate the images so we can see them properly? :bonk:
 
The shots are not suitable for exposure fusion because the brightness range is so restricted the Mid shot actually contains all the data and the dark and light ones add nothing extra.
I have tried TuFuse and adjusted curves in Photoshop, but it is no real help as you can see,

Ok so what is the best way to take HDR shots using my Nikon D50? What is the best situation lighting wise?

do exactly what you did before, just find a place you like with bright highlights and really dark low lights, this will make the hdr more like a vibrant and bright one.
maybe get a trail version of photomatix?
 
Someone here suggested night time can actually make interesting using usual exposure, just under and one pushing it right above?

I have done another in TuFusepro ... to extreme
It is pretty horrible.
I found another problem in that the three shots are out of register, looks like you did not use a tripod... this is essential for this sort of work. The first one I did was in Tufuse in PT Assembler which registers the image. Tufuse pro does not and you have to do it manually.

To get the exaggerated look you seem to want you need some thing like photomatrix which lets you tone map.
However many people do not like that look.

It was without a tripod indeed, was taken at work as a bit of an experiment! When I get home tonight I can try with a tripod... does Nighttime stuff work or is it best left for day time with dramatic cloud to light stuff..?

I've also processed your 3 photo's but i used photomatix . I think it boils down to the software you are using :shrug:

Do you think the standalone $39 version is good enough for what I want to do or will I need the pro?

I think if your only using it once in a while and you use a tripod for steadier shots + you don't bracket above 5 shots then go for the $39 one .Ahem if you google photomatix pro you might find it real cheap ahem:p

I had a quick go with QTPFSGUI. I used the defaults but selected Align Images and also selected the largest size in the tone mapping section.
I also did a bit of additional PP, just levels and contrast.

Not great as the originals did not have that much of a range but different to your attempt for some reason.
