I'm new to photography and I got a demo of lightroom 4. My question is do I need a plugin to use hdr. Also does all editing software need plugins for hdr or do some come with the original software. Thanks for your help.
 
You can get a sort of hdr style effect with just lightroom, but for true hdr you need to combine more than one image, something lr cant do on it's own.
Personally I like photomatix for my hdr but I also use a script in photoshop for a more subtle effect.
 
I've never used the plug-in version I always use the stand alone.

I have consistantly failed to get it to work, I have tried it on 3 different computers, and I have never managed to get it working properly, other products from the same company work fine, I love the Silver efex, but for some reason HDR efex just will not work on my computers.
