I don't know what this is?! but some of the pictures i've seen which then have people saying "i take it this has been HDR" look very nice..?

High Dynamic Range processing. Any film or sensor is limited in the degree of tones it can reproduce. HDR processing is a way of combining several shots of the same scene all metered for different areas to reproduce a larger range of tones.
 
oh yea, i remember reading a coloumn in a magazine about this, seems like it could be a very controversial way of working
 
Its every bit as controversial as when Ansell Adams started doing it in the darkroom, its just gotten more accessable now.
