Hello all.

Just a simple question.

I like HDR, and playing round with HDR, and I'm on a quest to learn to get better.

I have a Nikon D5000, and I was wondering, is it posiable to get the camera to automatically take 3 pictures, at different EV levels?

Rather than me, taking a picture, adjusting the EV, and taking another etc?

basically you set to auto bracket, set the increments ie -2, 0, +2 or what ever,
then you have the 3 files with 1 shot, the cam does all 3

then use a programe say like Photomatics or adobe CS to merge them as an HDR or exposure blend or do it manually on layers

Once you set the camera to bracketing, you need to use the timer so that it fires off 3 consecutive shots from the one shutter press.
 
May not be helpful to Nikon users but on canon you set the Auto bracketing and then can either press the shutter 3 times (I use a remote cable) or set the camera to continuous shooting and then press the shutter release once and it takes the 3, all bracketed, for you.
Remember to set shooting mode back to single after though otherwise you look like a n00b next time you're doing a normal hand held shot.
 
For some reason nikon made it harder to set this than canon, on nikon you have to choose exposure first in the menu then press one button and rotate a wheel to set the number of pic and another to set the amount of exposure difference (limited to one stop. Nikon do offer more frames though.
 
my sony a390 makes it harder still. exposure compensation can only be set to either +/-0.3 or 0.7 and the timer function can't be used at the same time :(
i've been using raw to adjust the exposure on a single file and working fom that just, with limited success i might add

i think it should..considering
my olympus can be set at bracket +/- your choice
it takes the first shot on the button...then sets the camera for the + then after you do the shot resets the camera for the -

so you have to steady the body up...shoot, shoot, shoot...and violin..you have your 3

my panasonic does them for you automatically
 
You can set the auto bracket feature of the D5000 to the Fn button, but don't ask me how!

It doesn't look like many people on here do this with a d5000 does it?

final word from the purists...all the shots should be at the same aperture to ensure accurate alignment of all image properties

so manual is the way...
set up the correct exposure trial and error..
then use that for your base shot
then +1 and -1 using the speed as the changing part of each shot

i havent been doing this but will in the future

I don't know about the D5000 but on my D300 I can set it to bracket in 1/3 stop increments.

If you set it on Aperture priority you don't need to worry about the focus changing - just make sure that the shutter speed doesn't go so low that you risk camera shake, though.

I mean a maxium of 1 stop, I didn't make that very clear sorry.
 
Hi,

I also have a D5000, you just need to press the bottom button on the left to enter the settings, select Exposure Bracketing and set it to +1 or whatever you like. Then take 3 shots. the first will be -1, second +1 and the third 0.
You will need to press the shutter 3 times though.
