I have an hdmi socket on the back of my pc, but no hdmi sock on any of my monitors. Will a male hdmi cable with a male vga going to the monitor on the other end work okay?

Not unless there is a conversion box. Do you have a DVI connector on the back of your monitors?

Yes, DVI and VGA

HDMI -> DVI is possible with a simple adapter. Just get one with the right polarity connections.
