Hi all, I think the time has come to say goodbye to my friend the 40D see here,

http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=461151

So looking at my options I think a 7D would be my best bet. Panamoz come in at 655 5% less for a BT and HDEW come in at £725. Having dealt with Panamoz in the past, I was more than happy.

Just wanted to see who people prefer to deal with?

I have dealt with Panamoz once and have nothing but praise for the way they dealt with my order from a customer perspective, however, I am concerned with the revealed tax/customs status of Far East suppliers like Panamoz and in future I am likely to deal with HDEW if I want to make savings on the product I am buying.

I've only ever dealt with HDEW and couldn't fault them at all. Kept me informed at all times as to what was happening when I got my 7d.

Consider DigitalRev also for imports. The 7D was less than £700 last week, I don't know what it is now but their service is incredible. I've bought 2 bodies from them.

Hmmm, think iam going to go with Panamoz if iam honest. The final price is £622 for the 7D nearly £100 less than HDEW. I might be able to get away with having beans on toast all month now instead of jsut beans

If the customs/taxman catch you, you are toast :D

Will keep my head down  dont worry I wont be doing much-if anything for the next couple of months now!

With HDEW looks like you get a 3 year UK warranty...is that with HDEW or with Canon?

Digital Rev price is £700

HDEW is their own warranty, repairs via a UK repairer:
All products come with a standard 1-year manufacturers warranty based on the sales invoice you receive with the product. All you need is to keep the invoice.
In addition we supply an extended cover to allow you to have the product repaired for a further 2 years (3 year guarentee in total). You need to keep the sales invoice and the Xtendcover card, which comes with the product

Cheers guys, now is that worth the extra £100 or not?! Do you know if the warranty can be transferred to a new owner if I sell it within three years?

Really kinda need a camera for this weekend aswell!

I've bought a 5D3 + 70-200 f2.8 mkII from Panamoz and the service was excellent. Luckily both have worked perfectly since I got them so I've had no need to see how the after sales service is but for the savings you can make I'd shop with Panamoz every time.

For me without doubt Panamoz wins. I went with them for my D7000, saved over a £100 and have a better warranty than buying UK (replacement rather than repair).

i am not sure the information about HDEW being a canon UK warranty is correct - the HDEW is grey market so I think they will not want to touch it during warranty period. I think it is all via HDEW who use AJ Johnstone in Hope St, Glasgow.

You'll be lucky to get a camera from the UK for this weekend, nevermind a grey import.

If you placed an order with Panamoz today you'd have it delivered on Monday.

Yeah cheers Rob, its really 50/50 for me at the mo on who too choose!

Sorry but your HDEW info is incorrect. They are grey imports but have been imported legally with tax etc paid and they are supplied with a UK invoice. Therefore canon will serive them in the UK. Its the same situation as Kerso on here.

What would happend to a faulty camera from Panamoz after a year? Would Canon fix it?

Nope, you would have to contact Panamoz who would sort it out for you. Canon would fix it but would charge you. Some manufacturers (eg Sigma) won't even touch grey imports at all.

I have an e-mail from AJ Johnstone in Glasgow saying that they don't care where a Canon camera has been purchased from, as long as you can provide a receipt then they will honour the Canon UK warranty.

Touch wood, I've not had to actually test if they really mean it but I have it in writing.

Did they clarify what they meant by a receipt? The few places I've read about require proof that VAT has been paid.

Doesn't your 1st two points contradict each other? Canon won't fix it but then they will?

Yes, Canon have and as far as I am aware, will still repair cameras and lenses from Panamoz, unless anything has changed since just before Christmas.

Yep, I am making no sense what so ever! What I meant to say was that Panamoz have a longer warantee so should be contected. If not canon would repair but it would cost! :)

Is it possible to do a direct bank transfer to Panamoz from a credit card?

Can you post a link to this - everything I have seen states that HDEW organize warranty claims in Year 1. Canon UK will only deal with EU supplied Warranty cards - regardless of tax. Invoice menas nothing, it is about the Warranty card/serial numbers.

Post 680 or there abouts.

And it is all about the invoice. Kerso's grey imports are fully canon covered because of the UK invoice showing tax and import paid.

If they were covered by EU warranty then both DigitalRev and HDEW would not be saying that they cover all warranty themselves rather than having Canon, Nikon etc doing it, why would they spend their own money rather than using the warranty? In addition they would include EU warranty cards in the boxes.

Again, the warantee card is neither here nor there, it is about the UK invoice showing tax etc paid. The same thing stands for Kerso (flashcamera) whom gets his stock from the US. Many members here have dealt with him and a number have had Canon UK warantee work done. I am starting to feel like a broken record! This only stands for HDEW as DR supply from outside the country and therefore don't give a UK invoice/receipt but they have an account set up that pays the tax etc.

(One caveat- this stands for Canon, I don't know about other manufacturers. I am told that Sigma UK won't touch any grey imports!)

I don't believe so with most cards. You'd need to do it as a cash advance, place that into your account and BT it from there.

The acid test with warranty work would be if the imports qualify for the Canon cashback offers. Email the supplier the cashback question and see what they say.

I know Kerso's do but can't speak for any others.

Perhaps the best way would be for someone to send off a broken lens and see what happens! ;)

Still not sure about this Jim and haven't seen anything from Mods in the other thread.
I would like to know, has anyone had a VAT invoice for goods bought from DR? Does their "import handling charge" really pay customs duty in advance or is it just like a communal insurance in case anyone gets picked up for duty?

I get where you are coming from, sorry about the broken record :) I gues the confusion I was having is you talking specially about HDEW and Canon, and me thinking of DigitalRev and Nikon, nevermind Tamron and Sigma who I know are very anti grey import.

My understanding is still that those manufacturers (Nikon, Tamron, Sigma) will not touch anything from outside the EU (including tax paid in EU) as a warranty claim. Canon will assuming tax is paid.

Outside warranty period Canon and Nikon will deal with you at your cost, Tamron and Sigma will not, so use a third party.

Is this correct?

It was in a thread a while ago at the end of which panamoz stopped being advertisers. Sorry I can't find it but it was deffo there somewhere. I also think there is a difference between buying from their site and ebay. However, until someone shows you all the evidence either way I will probably bow out as I have never actually purchased from DR! ;)

Sounds about right from what I have picked up across the forum over time. :)

I'm certain I've read numerous accounts of people receiving parcels from DR marked as gifts with minimal declaration amounts. But unlike Panamoz, there are also numerous accounts of people receiving customs charges from DR parcels.

I still have absolutely no idea what the 'import handling charge' actually achieves.

Yeah I think your right, well have to wait till payday then which is Friday.

Found some previous Admin input which both appears to indicate that they are all the same from TP Admin pov ...
