Yes
I'm not a noob with tellies, but I'm not up to date with all the latest model numbers etc.

Can someone suggest me a good set for around the £300 mark.

Preferences:
Would prefer a samsung or lg
LED
32" no more
Freeview HD tuner

Really appreciate the help

Ignore me, missed the 32" limit.

No worries. Out of interest, what was your suggestion?

I've found a Samsung UE32F5000 for £254, is there anything better?

Argos have a Toshiba 40" on offer for £299 at the moment. Bought one for the bedroom and it's a pretty solid set for 300 notes.

Just had a look, the 40L1333 ? Not bad but would have preferred Freeview HD tuner.

Not sure what size our sitting room telly is but it's a Samsung and it came from John Lewis. Freeview HD tuner built in and it's a Smart TV (got some built in apps and connects to the web via Wi-Fi.) Box (and receipt!) in loft so not sure on price.

Go bigger than you think you want. We watch from 10ft (to screen) and I'm thinking of upgrading from a 50" to a 65"....

I know you are going to be limited on a £300 budget, but I picked up a Panny 50" Plasma in March last year for £550 (Currys). The key is to wait until the new years models are being released and pick up one of last years sets at a bargain price. Not sure if that is possible for you....

65", mmmmmmmmmmmmm, I only have a 40 at home. I did pay a visit to costco the other day, and they had a 92" by the front door. huge isn't the word!!!!

Anyway, I got side tracked, lol

This set is for my gran and she's not that keen on a 40" although I think it would be best for her. The other things to consider is she won't be needing any of the smart features as she doesn't have a 'tinternet connection and she wants it sooner rather than later. the budget could push to £330, but I wanted to beat the one she had eyed up (both on price and features).

think the F5000 might be the answer, just hovering on the buy button.

Go into Richer sounds. They usually have decent prices and unlike most electronics shops the assistants actually have an interest in the products! Any of the samsung or lg with led back lights will do the job. Richersounds also offer a decent 5 year warranty that you can have fully refunded if you never use it during the 5 years. It's about 10% of purchase price.

I'd make sure you listen to them as some of the tvs these days aren't that easy to hear without a soundbar. My parents got an LG one as it was definitely clearer than the Samsungs.

Incidentally Pany have announced the drop of plasma after 2014 :(

I have the F5000 in the main bedroom plus my parents have one in their lounge, brilliant set for the money

Which is exactly why I'm considering upgrading (from a Pioneer LX508D) now... First Pioneer, then Panny. People go for cost over quality every time :(

was reading that Panasonic are also quitting making plasma's....sad day if true, my dad just got a panny plasma and it's a thing of beauty

Indeed, I might buy one of the 2014 range when it comes out, even though my 46" Panasonic is still is still absolutely fine, and I was thinking of a projector being my next AV purchase.

For a big screen you can't beat a projector. I've been looking at the Epson range as they come with 3 year on site warranty and 3 year/4000 hour bulb warranty. Bulbs aren't stupid money either.

Biggest innovation is in the moderately expensive Panasonic range (3.5k ish price) that have LED bulbs that last for ages. I worked out they should last me 15 years. They're guaranteed for 10 years I think. Properly bright too not the normal led projectors which only work in a bat cave.

Sizewise definitely, but thoroughly impractical.... cable routing, noise, light levels in a lit room...

Nope. Not an issue at all. I have mine behind me so I can hardly hear it. I wouldn't ceiling mount in front or directly above me as the noise would be noticeable. I have it sat several feet behind on a shelf on the wall.

Light levels aren't a problem with the more modern projectors as they're mostly 2000 lumens and above which is quite bright.

I run one hdmi cable and use a switcher. Means one single cable to be routed and mine just goes round the edge of the room so that isn't an issue and no more of one than wall mounting a tv.

If you're the kind of family that has the tv on all day then they're not suitable. If you're the kind that generally sticks the tv on in the evening for between 2 and 8 hours then they're great.

Once you get used to an 9 feet diagonal screen you really don't care about any mild inconvenience :D

And therein lies the problem - even though I have a large lounge, I (and I suspect 95% of the population) don't have several feet behind me. Nor do I want to run power/cabling etc. If you have a dedicated room they're fine, but they aren't practical (in the true sense of the word).

Agree with andy. Unless you can completely black out a room projectors even a high lumens unit isn't going to perform at its best.

And that's from working with a several thousand pound unit at work in a showroom. Which incidentally isn't quiet even mounted in the ceiling at the back of a 30ft room.

90% of people just don't have the space or control over the environment for a projector (as much as I'd love one).

If you run them attached to ceiling then the fans are running faster to dissipate the heat so they are much louder than they would be shelf mounted. Stick on a shelf and you can roughly halve the noise. If I put mine on ceiling setting its at least twice as loud and distractingly so.
