There I was, minding my own business, cutting the grass (which had become rather long over the past two weeks), mindful of the tigers and rogue bull elephants which may be lurking there, when I began to sneeze - and sneeze - for about three or four minutes without a break. Then the eyes started to get sore, so what did I do? Yes I rubbed them with my hands which had gardening gloves on, so my eyes started to water and sting like mad. Then I started to feel a bit dizzy and out of it (took me back to my youth and parties where someone brewed up some "magic mushroom tea:D), but I carried on regardless, and went in to have a well deserved shower.
Even after the shower and a meal, I still feel like I have a dose of flu, absolytely no energy and my muscles are aching.
Does anyone else suffer from hayfever on here?

Yes, and have done for years.
Antihistamines (and steroid sprays) help, but they're not perfect.

Yes, I take prescription antihistamines and it also can trigger asthma as well. I've noticed down here atleast, the last couple of weeks have been exceptionally bad. Possibly the worst I've known. I guess in combination the very wet and very hot weather we've been having have prompted a growth spurt of various plants thats caused it. If also heard, purely anecdotally that thunderstorms may worsen symptoms.

All in all Im not surprised if you haven't seen it for a couple of years its shown up it the last couple of weeks. Several of my friends have shown symptoms for the first time ever

That would seem to explain it then. The plants (weeds really) in our garden have grown to virtual "Triffid" proportions, and I had to use the strimmer on them today. The attack came on really quickly.

I've suffered for more years than I care to remember, being allergic to all forms of pollen and, to a lesser extent, dust. The strange thing is that I nearly always feel better when I get out of the town and into the countryside away from cars and pollution.

Early in the year I do... oak pollen.
Not crippling, but thoroughly unpleasant enough.
Those of you who suffer badly have my sincere sympathy.

Used to have hayfever as a kid. Don't as an adult.

Try antihistamine tablets, antihistamine eyedrops and/or steroid nasal sprays. Vaseline in nostrils helps too.

I'm dossed up at the moment on everything the doctor will give me, sprays / tablets / drops / puffer's. I've had hayfever all my life, but this year the season seems a bit late in starting, but really bad now it's got underway.

My sympathy to all the other sufferers on here :(

I never used to but started about 10 years ago, not major bad like you see some but I have wicked sneezing fits, one of which was this morning, the morning after having a large tooth out and the sneezing has burst the forming clot so I am sitting here biting on a cotton swab again :(

Had hayfever as a kid but not too severe, grew out of it as a teenager but in the last couple of years it seems to have some back.

Last year I kept treating myself for a "summer cold" as I was constantly bunged up and had a sore throat but it didn't really get any better, it was only when the wife said "could it be hayfever?" the penny dropped so I started using Beconase nasal spray and things improved.

I not take tablets and use a nasal spray daily which helps although I still get bunged up from time to time.

Hayfever sucks.

The popular tablets of choice that actually work for most are.... Cetirizine and Loratadine, these are the active ingredient in the expensive stuff sold at chemists. They are both non drowsy. Try 1 type NOT both, 1 tab a day. Buy generic its much cheaper.

e.g. Benadryl is Cetirizine and its £6.59 for 14 tabs, Generic Cetirizine is £1 for 30 tabs.
Clarityn is Loratadine and its £5.19 for 14 tabs, Generic is £1 for 30 tabs.

Neither of these worked on me so Im on a prescription of Fexofenadine Hydrochloride. All of these should kick in after about 7-14 days, its trial an error as to which works. Can also use Beconase alongside which is over the counter.

Good luck, its a total PITA but with medication becomes bearable. HTH someone.

I think I used Clarityn before, so may well get some generic alternative today.
I have definitely improved this morning, probably due to the wet weather and cooler temperatures.

Try chemistdirect (I dont work for them). This weather helps.

I used Loratadine for years then switched to Cetirizine when it came to market in my teens. Been using it ever since (c. 20 years) but it's not perfect so my Dr has just prescribed me Fexofenadine. I'm a couple of weeks in and I'm underwhelmed. My sneezing is no better and I'm getting dry itchy eye that I've not had in years. I'll see through to the end of the box, but I think I'll be back to Cetirizine. At least it's cheap!
The nasal sprays help a lot, but you can't use them all the time.

Yeah, I avoid nasal sprays (steroid), long term use is bad. Can also try Neilmed sinus rinse (which is also good for colds) and opticrom for the eyes.

I remember being at school in Worcestershire in the 70's and the father of a boy I knew invented a 'hay fever helmet'. I seem to remember it causing a bit of interest on the news at the time, it did look a bit weird I guess. A quick Google and YouTube came up with this:

Had it for fifty years plus, tried everything and just use Beconase morning and night these days, definitely gets better with age.

Had an allergy test and it came back with, Grass, Mould, Cats and Dust Mites from those sampled.

Mine started suddenly when I was 16. This year has been medium to high symptoms, previous couple of years have been pretty non eventful weirdly. About 4 years ago I was on a hen do and it was so bad i could barely stop sneezing, had a red raw face and could hardly breathe it was hideous. I don't know what it was exactly there, we were staying in an old house so maybe it was dust as well as pollen. My usual symptoms are itchy eyes, sneezing, itchy ears and throat. The generic ceterizine and loratdine do nothing for me, clora-something (the active ingreident in piriton) works some what but makes me supe drowsy. The only thing that hits it at all is the type of benadryl which contains acrivistane for which there is no generic equalivant and its £3-£4 for a box of 12 which is annoying, but i did stock up the other year online on a special deal, and got one that had a decongestant in too. I use beconase spray as well, i did buy one of those infra red things you stick up your nose but juries out on if it worked.... When i first started having it i had eye drops too, but they gave me gross taste in my mouth so i stopped.

Sunday i went out for a walk and forgot to take a tablet and i rubbed my eye so much that i ended up with a fluid blister under my eye like a massive gnat bite - LOVELY!
