Have you tried kite photography?

Yes
I've known about rigging up an old camera to take a shot every ten seconds or so, attaching it to a kite and flying it as high as it will go until the batteries run out for a while but not given it much thought until now

has anyone on here given it a shot?
what results did you get?
how exactly do you set up an old camera to take a picture every few seconds?

a friend of mine is a kite surfing instructor and he has those huge kites that are more like parachutes so im going to get him involved in the project

With a kite that size you could probably use a small DSLR to which attachment of a wireless shutter release is possible, you can shoot when you feel it's in the correct position then.

GoPro HD would be your best bet as they are much cheaper than a DSLR, much lighter and can take a lot more abuse (they are designed for extreme sports, a 5D Mark II with 16-35mm L lens is not).

Saying that though I can't see weight being an issue, I'm 14 stone and I've had a relatively small (3 metre) kite make me airborne in moderate winds. It's damage I'd be more worried about, when you brake a kite in high winds it generally doesn't come down gently.

Really good idea, for my a-level project im doing graffiti and urban landscapes, i think this could definitely make for some good urban landscape stuff :D

thanks for the links, if i try it ill definitely post any photos i get up here :)
