Not sure if this is the right area but..

Switched PC on this morning and got a pop up, "windows can not start" recover etc etc.

First thought was when did I last do a back up and how many pictures could I have lost.:bonk:

Sorted now, nothing lost and have now set up scheduled back ups.

When did you back up last? Could you explain to family why there are no pictures from that great holiday.

Well I'm a little paranoid when it comes to backing up

I don't have any automated processes in place but this is my storage arrangement....

All (approx 20K) images are on my laptop, I back them up to a 320gb external HDD and add new photos to the ext drive after processing them.

Periodically I copy/backup the contents of the 320gb ext HD to two seperate 1TB HDDs.

I also plan to get another external HDD which I'll copy all of my images to and leave at my parents' house for extra "protection"

My PC automaticly backs up to an offsite server every day, and then also to an external hard drive at the same time. It also backs up to an internal hard drive straight after.
I then manually backup about once every 2 weeks to two seperate USB drives

So thats an offsite server, 3 external drives and one internal drive..
Hopefully that should cover me for most situations!

Hello all.

I feel safer now i have an external 1Tb drive.

I Backup all my RAW+XMP files and converted JPEG files on it:)

All my photos are stored on my NAS which nightly backups to external drive and to Amazon S3 cloud in Ireland.

I have a netgear ready Nas with 2 x 2TB drives inside in Raid mode, installed with auto back up of the PC every Sunday morning.

The PC (a Win 7 64 bit), is a also set for a weekly backup and this backup, is backed up to the NAS (if you follow me) :-).

As someone else said, the NAS is then backup up to blueray, and that is then kept in a fire proof safe.

Free File Sync http://freefilesync.sourceforge.net/ is excellent.
It's the 1st thing I run after downloading a card full of NEFs to my PC, and it syncs them all to a 640GB external HDD (WD Elements).
It also means that any edits I have made to NEFs are synced as well, and as I regularly review older NEFs and purge useless ones it means that the purges are synced as well.

Windows operating system backed up weekly, so if C fails I can clone a new drive immediately and be up and running again.

D drive (90% of all installed software) backed up when a new program added

2 intenal copies on separate 1.5TB drives of images, documents, mail etc.

3 external backups on similar drives with one rotated off site.

RAW files duplicated onto a seperate drive when imported, Incremental backup runs every 2 hours to the same drive.

Full back up runs every day to a 3rd local drive and an offsite drive at which point all the incrementals from the previous day are deleted.

That would be the Amazon Cloud that has catastrophically crashed at least twice this year permanently losing millions of files.

There were two cases of elastic cloud unavailability this year which have nothing to do with S3 and didn't result in any data loss. What millions of files are you talking about?

This is something i'll have to look into

All my pictures and music are all stored on NAS at the mo, with no other back up.
