Have you already taken your best ever pic

You always have to hope the best is yet to come or what is your motivation to continue?
I'd like to think there is a perfect shot waiting for me one day :)
 
Always looking for a better one - never truly satisfied with virtually any I've taken. If you've already taken your best what keeps you motivated?

THe cr*p I can produce, there better be somthing of a higher standard one day!
 
Good grief I hope not! :)

I look back at what I was shooting 2-3 years ago and I can see the improvement and I hope to keep moving forward although one day the pace might just slow a little as I get closer to being as good as I can be. (I still don't know how long that will be!)
 
Well someone asked me once "whats the best photograph you've taken" and I said..... "The one I'm going to take tomorrow"

I've certainly taken my best so far but I don't know if I have accurate enough foresight to say if it'll remain so forever.

If i have then I will always produce c%£p photos....So i HOPE not.

Haha thats exacty what I was going to say.

Every photo is a learning experence, I cant imagen many perople that have said right thats perfect. In a strange way I kinda hope I never get that perfect image. If I did I wouldnt have anything to aim for, If that makes sense.
 
To date I have only taken a couple of shots that I am completely happy with, but I would like to think that the best is yet to come !

I don't think you will ever have the best ever picture unless you quit photography and look back at your past shots....

In each picture, you could always find some imperfection to improve...
 
I've taken one about a year ago that i'm really pleased with , haven't took anything nearly as good since
 
I have had a pic taken out of the blue that seemed to tick all the boxes. I hope I will better it one day but it will be difficult
 
Noboday knows what tomorrow brings...

I've only been taking photographs since January, every time I go out I find one I like better than the last and hope that continues.

There are a couple of shots I love that I have taken which I love but if I even thought I had taken my best shot already I would sell all my kit and find a new hobby.

You can never know it all and there is always something new to learn...
 
Every time a go out to take images I "normally" come home with something better than before. Thats why I am addicted to photography!

I've been at the game a little over thirty years now.

With any luck I'll have about the same amount of time taking photos ahead of me.

I guess it's a fifty/fifty chance.
 
I think If I can't improve on my best so far its time to give up the camera.....

Only if your skills and equipment decline at an equal rate to how they improved - the fact is most people keep improving, meaning the chance you'll take a better picture within the next 30 years has to be higher!

Having read that agiain - what a silly question - if the answer is YES - then sell all your gear - if it's no - of course it's no - we can't see into the future. Trust me - your next picture is our best one - always!!
 
If I have, then what is the point of striving for better.

Agree with Andrew on this, if you have, sell all your gear and start going fishing or summat.
 
i have a hundred thousand pics in my collection and i can find somehting wrong wiht every single one of them.... i doubt the day will ever arrive when i take the perfect pic...but if it does i will be posting it:)
 
Definitely not. I'd not necessarily say the next pic is always the best pic. I know I'm going to be shooting some absolute crap in the future in amongst the possible good - Mistakes and bad images are what help us learn and improve! :)

Even my personal favourites have little flaws in them that hindsight would force me to change given the chance to reshoot.

So I've definitely not shot my best yet. As others have said, if you don't think you can improve, sell your gear and take up a new hobby (if photography is a hobby) or become a photo editor (as Joe McNally suggests).
 
Sad to say I do think I've taken my best ever image, I took it in the early 90s and although I have taken some good images since I don't feel I have ever come close to bettering that image!

Sorry have to disagree with you on this one. There are many hobbies where people are likely to hit a peek, many sports could apply, but because they can't achieve the same level, it does not mean they would stop. They may still love their hobby and continue with it as a source of enjoyment.
I note that EdBray believes he has taken his best, but don't think he has sold all his gear.
 
I guess you also need to account for the 'opportunity' to capture a better photograph, as in being in the right place at the right time. You will never know if that is going to happen :)
 
I took a photo a couple of years back that won a national competition, award ceremony in manchester, displayed on adverts etc. Didn't think I'd top that.

Then I took a fav picture of mine for TP's photographer of the year comp, which did really well and also won another comp.

But then over the last two weeks I've shot birds in flight for use in a product advert, a car shoot with shots going to be used in a magazine, two portrait sessions one outdoor and one in a studio, two product shoots and the WHF cat day out. I'm pretty happy with the shots from all of the different disciplines.

I think if I didn't think I could improve I wouldn't be happy

It's been shown before, but it just ticked all the boxes for me, portrayed what I had set out to to acheive. It was taken on a 500CM Blad with 80mm planer C.

I made a point of posing the bride & goom in the sunlight and the bridesmaids in the shadows covertly watching!

It may not be to everybody's taste, but I have done very nicely from this picture, the exposure was spot on and all the elements were made up to tell a story.

I have taken many images that I am pleased with (and many more I am not) but I personally don't feel that any have come up to the standard of this one.

This was one shot from a wedding where I shot a mamimum of 5 rolls of 12, and I didn't have the advantage of getting to see if they were okay prior to their development.

This image was a scan from the 120 neg on my epson scanner, an actual print from the negative has a lot more definition.

I know what my best shot to date is. But I also know I can easily beat it. But I intend to enjoy practicing while I wait for that moment to come, and hopefully I'll stumple across a few other cracking images on my journey.

Same here... taking shots of fish is all good and well for the bank account but it'll never get me into the National Gallery methinks!! :)

That's gonna take some beating ;).

I agree with SMT's post - opportunity has a lot to do with it. Capturing a 'once in a lifetime' picture doesn't have to mean that you give up your passion for photography, surely :shrug:!?
