Have we got a ghost?

Not overly worried, we will start to worry if things start to move, and be re positioned in a different area.

It could be a nun walled up somewhere. I've heard they were always getting walled up for having affairs with Bishops.

But that would not make a noise like a cabinet / cupboard door being slammed shut.
probably not as loud as slamming a door, but still enough to startle. It's worse on a wooden suspended floor.

It sounds like a cupboard door being slammed shut, and with a good bit of force too. Can't even pinpoint where the noise comes from, as it is only one load bang, so no opportunity to go in search of the noise.

It is loud enough for me to get up and go and check, I don't know why I keep checking, as there is never anything for me to see.
But I still check all the rooms, and nothing has fallen or anything, it is just as we left it. It really does feel like someone is slamming the cupboard, then running and hiding. :$

It only happened once this morning, sometimes it can be in the afternoon and sometimes it may happen a few times, at varying times of the day.
I can't even put a camera in each room and put them on record, as they only record for half an hour, so that would be of no use.

Hmmm! if it is random as to time of day and apparent location I come back to point that it is next door neighbours...................depending on the construction sounds from next door can transmit/reverberate is ways that are hard to explain.

If you have access to a couple of old smartphones that you might be able to briefly sort out to access Google Store (Andriod) or Apple Store as appropriate, to install a sound recording app on to them. Then hang them of or other wise place them against the neighbour wall, then once you hear the noise again go and check the recording to try to narrow down in which part of the house it is emanating from?

you would be surprised by the amount of real treasure that has been found after people have seen ghosts or visions .. two that I can think of are the Sutton hoo treasure and the gold cape of mold

i-m-not-saying-that-it-s-aliens-but-it-s-definitely-aliens.jpg

I used to be part of a paranormal investigation team, 99.9% of all investigations came up with a logical explanation, many and varied, but all were scientifically explained one way or another. the 0.1%?

Yep that was it!

No, as when I am in the only adjoining room to next doors house, I hear the noise from the room that is not attached, not next doors noise, as it certainly from within our house.

Our bungalow does it at least twice a week, very loud. Like yours it sounds like someone giving one loud knock on the door. Depending on which room you are in it sounds like it's coming from different areas, we have put it down to expansion / contraction. I won't say what I have under the bed ( no not a p*** pot) but I regularly go out in the middle of the night with it to check on things when I hear the bang.

I love a ghost story although in my experience, any potentially supernatural events of this type have so far, always turned out to have worldly causes. That said, nothing has been ruled in or out here. It's a subject I'm open minded about.

I do get uneasy in some situations, dark forests at night are prime examples for me, most of the time I'm fine, others I just feel unsettled and I'm not afraid of the dark. A few years ago (2014 actually) we had to move to emergency accomodation, to a house that was recently refurbished. It was big and old though, with 2 long passage ways and on one occasion, I was there by myself, it was getting dark and I was just about to leave through the back door and for some reason, I looked back along the passageway and the only light was a small fish tank, so it was quite eerie. I didn't hear or see anything to make me look back but I did fell very uneasy and I'm not sure why.

Our stay there was uneventful though apart from that house being quite noisy through the night. It had big old, oak beams for rafters and I think the whole house expanded through the day, then contracted in the cool of the night.

Ok Dale here's one for you........Back in the 70s I worked in a paper mill boiler house, the boiler house a prohibited area to non staff. The four boilers were 4 gantry's high, the gantry's were open mesh type, this particular day there were the usual 3 boilermen and one pipe lagger all wearing our id neck chains. The lagger was working on a steam drum on a 3 foot wide walkway on the top gantry on his own, I had a walk up to have a chat with him. He was kneeling down lagging the drum and it was very loud up there so I knelt down at the side of him to chat and our legs were now blocking the walkway. After a couple of minutes chatting we both noticed a guy wearing a brown smock coat with a red collar walking towards us and we both had to lean forwards and swing our legs sideways to allow him to go past he then turned a corner to walk down the side of the boiler. I got to my feet to check out who he was and what he was doing but he had vanished, he could have only gone down one stairway to the ground about 30 feet below us and I could see through all the gantry's to the ground level. The two other boilermen said nobody had past them. The lagger and I spoke about it for years after.

Maybe that is just all it is...

Happened again this morning, the same sort of cupboard bang closed, sort of noise.

do you have extractor fans in the kitchen / bathrooms? Could be the wind blowing the flaps outside open and shut.

No tried that, and I have heard it while in the bathroom, but noise came from different direction.

We have some near-suicidal pigeons who keep flying into our large picture windows, makes me jump. Usually you can see a dusty 'outline' on the windows where they strike.

Had a few of those happening, it is a pretty distinct sound, a bird hitting a window. A bit of a thud and slightly pranging sound.

PS

Not sure if we will ever get to the bottom of the mysterious bang, just one of those things.

Does anyone have personal experiences(s) they're willing to share suggesting that ghosts may exist, or alternative explanations for this sort of 'paranormal' activity?

FWIW, I'm sceptical. I've never felt, seen or heard anything that would persuade me to believe in ghosts but I posted the question because I'm curious, not as some sort of challenge.

I think this is quite a common experience.

As you hear it in different locations then it's likely to be water pipes as they carry water throught out the house. Does it happen some time after a toilet flush or the sink/bath filled ? There's a phenomena called 'water hammer' Maybe you try this. Turn off the stop cock, drain the system which will 'reset' the system. Do you have any plumber friends you could ask for advice ? I think a plumber could test the system.

As for living near the Norton Priory, Runcorn.

Norton Priory is one of the most excavated monastic sites in Europe, During these excavations 49 stone coffins have been unearthed along with 130 skeletons, mostly of males aged between 36 and 45. The causes of death were many, including Leprosy, Tuberculosis and Rickets.

 At least 10 deaths were caused by severe fractures to the head and neck area. One of the skeletons was that of a pregnant woman, the coffin also sadly held the remains of a 34 week old baby. Loud screams and growls have been reported coming from with the ruins of this vast location, Ghostly dark shadows have been seen wandering through the grounds.

A grisly murder is thought to have taken place there around 750 years ago. A researcher at the University of Liverpool revealed that the skeleton of a 13th-century knight buried at the Priory was killed by a sword cut to his upper back. It had been believed the man, in his late 40s, died from natural causes but the recent discovery suggests a more sinister death.A single sword blow to the upper back seems to have sliced through several vertebrae and would have caused terrible damage to the muscles and nerves in the man’s back.

According to Shirley Curtis- Summers, the PhD researcher who discovered the injury, it would have been a mortal wound, but one that may have left him alive for several hours yet unable to walk.

My money's on water pipes, though..lol.

I have only heard stories from the neighbours, saying things like they have seen monk like figures passing their window. The figures disappeared down a dead end, and those neighbours seemed very sensible and level headed. But I have not seen anything myself. Only those strange banging noises.

Maybe it is the water pipes, but it can happen early in the morning waking us up, or at any time during the day. This is when we have not used the toilet or water for many hours.

Thanks for that info...

Some of the neighbours do believe the area is haunted, but as I said, I have never seen anything. But yes, interesting and grisly information.

My sister swears blind that she sees ghosts and has a few stories to tell.

The most recent was around 2004/05. She had recently returned to the UK from South Africa with her family and had rented a house in Manby (Lincolnshire). The houses was a new build and had been built on the grounds of an old airforce base.

They lived in the house for a few months and she was always on about a presence in the house. She would often see shadows on the wall and catch glimpses of somebody walking past a door or up the stairs. Even her husband felt it when something pushed him down the stairs while he was walking down them. He felt a definite shove but nobody else was around.

A few months later the neighbours were moving out and my sister managed to arrange with the owner to swap houses and move in next door. On moving day they had just finished moving every across and finished cleaning up the now empty house. She locked the door and had a last look through the window.

Standing in the living room was a man in airforce uniform. He saluted her and vanished.

Some years back when we had a TP IRC channel (not sure if we still do) we had a member who lived in Essex and the village was well know to the locals for hauntings.

That went years ago. Hardly anyone knew about it, and even less people used it...

Just funny noises in there now...

I'm a sceptic on these matters and believe there's some rational explanation but it would be churlish to scoff at these experiences that people have. Here's a copy of Jeff's post on page 1 here (The black fox)

  • Some 30 or so years ago we had a small guest house in rhyl , and virtually everyone that stayed in the smallest bedroom reported seeing a lady sat on the bed .to many different people mentioned it to be pure imagination , Never scoff weird things do occur.
I can't recall the name of the hotel my wife stayed in for a working weekend funded by her employer and a guest speaker came..re public speaking and after breakfast he gave his lecture and the first thing he related was talking to his wife on his phone before breakfast and watching his car key slide along the dressing table top and onto the floor. The dressing table was level. Also, my wife's co-worker asked to be moved from her room as the wardrobe door opened. It had been closed properly and the temperature in the room was chilly.' The hotel is in south Devon. I'll ask my wife tomorrow. She's asleep right now and wouldn't appreciate being woken up. lol. It's actually been featured on tv. The building is several hundred years old.

That's odd...

There was a new post in this thread - I clicked on it - there was no new post.
Must've been a ghost.
Ghost post yes, the post above yours was deleted by the poster.
Nothing more sinister :D

Has that delete option always been there or is it new?

I hope it's new or I'm an unobservant buffoon.

Yes, its always been there, but the staff can still read deleted posts. ;)

I couldn't possibly comment :D

Crikey, that's odd.

I suppose it's never occurred to me to delete a post once I've made it.

I am a buffoon. I embrace it.

Oh, I do have ghost stories. I have no doubt that there exists more than is in your philosophy Horatio.

Not heard the noise this morning. I have been walking around the house over the last day or so, trying to figure out where the noise is coming from.
Maybe the ghost knows I am onto them.

Isn't it always the way .. It's probably been reading this thread, Jon :D

I am going to contradict myself and my earlier posts here as this thread had reminded me of something that happened a few years ago.

My wife, daughter and myself were staying at Airth castle, not in the castle itself but in the hotel, which is in the grounds. The castle has a reputation for being haunted, as most do I suppose.

Anyway, I went for a walk after dinner by myself, it must've been just after 10pm. I wanted to photograph the castle, as it was lit up by floodlights. I took some photos, didn't think they were up to much and didn't give them another thought until we got back home.

I checked them on my PC, loaded them into LR. I went through them one by one, mainly family snaps, a few of the Kelpies and a few of the castle. One image of the castle though was like a blue negative when I viewed it. I was tired, so left it until the next day. This time, the image loaded properly and in full colour. I did though notice a figure, bottom right of the image.

I can't explain the figure, I don't recall seeing anybody at the time. I was only outside the castle a few minutes. I have no reason to make this up and there is probably a perfectly, good and normal explanation but I can't explain it as it stands, as like I say, as far as I'm aware, I was alone.
