Feeling a bit worn down as everyone keeps telling me I have dropped a b*****k moving to Nikon. Its wearing me down in that I am starting to worry that I have....

I had so much trouble with my Canon Mark III that I really could not be bothered to send away for yet another fix. I realise it is a wonderful camera when it works, but the Nikon D300 is a super camera.

The trouble is that we are now spoiled. The high ISO on it is excellent - certainly better than Digic 2 from Canon.

What are peoples thoughts on this? Forget the Nikon vs. Canon thing, just simply talk about cameras. Not looking for assurance or guidance, just an opinion....

Look at your posting...you had so much trouble with your Canon now your happy with your Nikon. Tell the crowds their only jealous, plus that the only dropped b*****k will be owned by one of the people dishing the grief

By the way i use Canon
 
I doesn't matter what other members think. Whatever choice meets your needs and feels right for you is the right one.
Had I suffered the frustrations of the Mk3 I suspect that I would have been tempted to change to the "dark side"; but there again I'm here already.
 
I made a similar topic a while ago.
I was worried that I'd made the wrong decision by choosing canon, because the current Nikon lineup looks so tasty, but the thing I realised was that its not important what kit you have, as long as you enjoy using it.
It seems the mk3 gave you nothing but grief, and you're really loving the d300, so there is no problem! Ignore everyone else, be your own man, all that stuff.

Not members as such. Other people....

My Mark III was with Canon for 5 weeks from Nov Dec and still did not work properly.
 
I don't think you've made a mistake. I think Nikon have some superb kit on the go just now. If I wasn't so committted with glass I'd definitely be in the market for a D300 or D3
 
I never usually get into seriously discussing the Nikon Canon divide, because I've had both marques and love each of them. They're both in a class of their own IMHO.

It has to be said though, that for a few years Nikon really took their eye off the ball with Canon offering three different sensor sizes, including full frame, while they (Nikon) soldiered on with their single 1.5X sensor.

Nikon biggest gaff of all is that they still don't offer image stabilised super telephoto lenses, years after Canon have been supplying them, and this has caused armies of wildlife photographers to migrate to Canon. Absolutely nuts !

I'm very happy to see Nikon returning to the fray in earnest now with their current cameras and full frame option. The day these two makers stop slugging it out we'll all be the poorer. ;)

As for you switching marques Pete, only you know if you did right the thing and for the right reasons. The mere fact that you're asking the question at this early stage makes me wonder. ;)
 
Lets get a grip on reality here......it's a piece of consumer electronics, it's not as if it's going to affect the world in any way so Why care about what others think?

Does it sit nice in your hand?
Can you use it's functions and make it capture the image you want?


If the answers to those questions are YES, then you've made an informed choice and bought the kit thats right for YOU.

If the answers are NO, try harder!!!! you've invested a shed load of cash and you owe it to yourself and your bank balance to get the best from it.

Yeah - I am happy. For now. The thing is that this investment is leading to a D3 later on, perhaps a D4.

Cause I do care. I value opinions. Simple as that...

I do like your point however because, yes it is getting me the image I want.

And the cash investment went a long time ago. This was a deal to keep me as I was so fed up with the Canon.....I paid little to nothing on this.
 
Value opinions by all means......don't live by them :nono:

The world is full of parallels, good vs evil......ford vs vauxhall.....chalk vs cheese.....canon vs nikon

do they stop the world spinning? Nah.......crack on with it and make some cash with the tools you have to hand m8 :thumbs:
 
Can't say you made the right choice or not, only you'll know after using them on crappy night shoots, the ones that push the camera to the limit then you'll really know.

For folk that do it for a job then it is an important decision but I'll be honest and say if Nikon had not have brought out the D3 range then I was seriously thinking on selling up and switching over due to the noise performance and i've been Nikon since the eighties.

I would'nt let it bother you, its a tool and it sounds like your happy with the D300's already.

I have to say Pete, having played with a D300 I would have upgraded if it wasn't for the £8-9k I've got sunk (I nearly said invested) in Canon glass. Nikon have come up trumps with this one. A crop sensor with excellent noise performance and the pro spec AF system. Hopefully it may stop Canon keeping its 45 point AF in the 1-series only.

They do now. Recently launched some more so now have 200 f/2, 300 f/2.8, 400 f/2.8, 500 f/4 and 600 f/4 all with VR. That's a more versatile range than Canon currently offer (although there is the 200/2 on the way).
 
I love my D300 & I'v moved from a 1D & 5D. If I were offered the trade back I wouldn't, as simple as that. I am happy I moved to Nikon & I for one feel that I made the right choice. You can make the camera work for you so I'd stop worrying & just enjoy shooting :thumbs:
 
Having been involved with Nikon since the late 70's I consider myself to be a dyed in the wool user, well used to using that kit.

Being more involved with wedding photography recently I felt the line up prior to the D3/D300 release left me vulnerable in the noise stakes. I have to admit, and it only lasted a few moments, I seriously considered swapping to the 'light side'. ;)

Using the D300 has put things back into context for me and I don't need to swap all that lovely Nikkor glass we have. Phew! Glad I kept the faith - but I did wobble!
 
It's not what you use it's how you use it.

If you're pleased with the results of your new kit, and now have peace of mind that your Nikon isn't going to let you down mechanically, then why give a 4x what others think.

Seems to me like it's Canon that screwed up, they lost a pro customer and I wonder how many others are thinking of changing.

I still want a 5D though :D

I don't know that much about the d300, but I know that the nikons really are standing toe to toe with canon now. If you had asked me that a year ago tho..............

At the end of the day it what you want and like, aslong as it does the job you want.
 
I personnally havent used a Nikon, and rarely use my Canon, but from the things ive seen and read, there is next to nothing in it... Both systems are more than capable of producing great work, in your hands im quite sure youll get the best out of whatever camera you happen to have, be it, Canon, Nikon or Nokia N95.

Let your photos do the talking as to whether youve made the right choice. :)
 
Come on Pete, you know better... it's not the camera that's important. If you're happy with the control layout and feel then that's all that matters - just relax and enjoy taking some great photos.

Or, putting it another way: "You think that's air you're breathing now?"

Pete ... I have been with the Darkside for more years than I care to remember ... :suspect: ... and if I could get half the performance out of my gear as I know you can I would be one happy Greenie ... :D

As for others giving you grief and getting you down ... :thinking: ... treat them the same as your gear and ... :shrug: ... change your friends ... ;)

It's the right choice today and maybe the wrong choice tomorrow. In a months time we could all be cooing over Pentax again like it was 30 years ago.

I think that the first thing any professional (in any trade) needs is confidence in his tools.....you didn't have that so a change was a must...I'd have done the same in your shoes. I don't suspect that anyone booking your services has ever asked you N or C before giving you the job

As an amateur with a quite heavy investment in a system then swapping becomes prohibitive so, for me, it wouldn't be an option.
If we ever reach the stage where someone can look at an image and know whether is was taken using Nikon kit or Canon kit....that'll be the time when the choice really matters.

Pete it doesnt mater what everyone says, if your happy with the finished picture thats all that matters.

I must say the 1dmk3 is the worst camera i have ever used from canon the 1dmk2n still has the edge, my new 1dsmk3 is in a diffrent world the files from it are great, but the d300 and d3 are probably better at a few things so it just a matter of pay your money and take your choice.

But seriously going to nikon :lol::lol::lol: ;)
 
If you have no confidence in your gear, it's a worry when you go out on a job, or as an amateur, just even take a picture. You've had a bad experience with Canon, so you voted with your feet.

You're happy with your new kit, it works well, and more important you have confidence in it.

And surely this is all that matters. If you are happy then sod everyone else, a lot of people have very vociferous opinions on the net and are such dyed in the wool afficionados of their particular marque that they lose sight of reality - and forget to take their blinkers off.
 
You made your decision and im sure you considered it long and hard.
Im sure if people had not seen you with your previous kit you would not be getting so much grief.
There is no point getting hung up on it it was your decision and as long as it does what you want and you are happy, you after all are the one using it.
I feel sorry for individuals that feel the need to put people down i find them sad.
People should be more supportive and not derisive we are not on this world for long so enjoy every minute you can and make others enjoy there time as well if you can.

Yea I'd also suggest its all in your mind Pete, and more importantly to you, in their minds too.

Sound like your putting up your own barriers... hope you don't mind me suggesting that. Bit like thinking what 'it' was like with your old lover, instead of getting (loving) into how the new one does 'it'.

Bit abstract but hey. :D
