Following on from my previous thread about 24-70 or 24-105 I have purchased following all the recomendations a 17-55mm 2.8 from ebay however the listing did say the IS does not always function properly. This did not stop me from bidding and as always with ebay i went above my limit. So how important is IS on this lens? how will I know if it is not working properly? is it possible to have fixed? on the listing it said they had a quote for £200 does this seem about right?

Thanks in advance...

IF you got it for £200 less than market value, and IF the £200 quote is correct then you may break even. I wouldn't have bought it, but I genuinely hope it works out ok for you Neil.

Thanks, I had set my limit at £200 but ended up paying £312, if I can get it serviced and repaired for £200 then it would be what I wanted to pay for one.

Ok the lens arrived today and it is really good. The image stabilation is a bit noisy but does seem to work however when I turn it on the lens seems to move down a bit. Is this normal with this lens?

Do you mean the image appears to move down? if so I have 100-400 here doing the same thing and its going to canon today, it also stops reporting the aperture and locks the camera up.

Hi yes the image does appear to move down when you turn it on but it does then seem to work.

Don't the IS lenses reset on turn on? Does the image come back up after a second or two ?

The IS on the 17-55 does have the habit of going , the usm motor is also known for above average failure rates. IS units can and do stutter slightly in operation on some models especially if you pan when attuating. Some lenses have IS settings to reduce horizontal panning stabilisation to prevent this, the 17-55 hasn't so don't go waving it around when using I.S.
I personally always turn I.S off unless using the lens in low light, little point in wearing it out if shooting at decent shutter speeds. I'd vote to send it in for a check and possible replacement of the I. S. if it costs you £200 it will still have been a good buy.

None of my other lenses with IS do this, the image does not dissapear just moves down a bit. I don't mind sending it for repair just want to make sure it is faulty first.

Canon got the 100-400 yesterday morning, £127.50 for the repair inc VAT return postage and 6 month warranty.

Thanks I have still not got round to sending it off, have had a quote from a place in Colchester of £200 for service and new IS which is very tempting. Did you use the canon place in Borehamwood I was going to see if you can drop items off here as I do not live that far away. Also do you know how long it will take as I need it back for a holiday later in April?

That's what I thought...but the lens has none. But then I realized we're talking about the Canon version and not the Nikon version.

if it had been nikon it would have been vr  same thing different name

You should be ok, just ask them.

Thanks for all the replies, just thought I would give an update. I had the lens repaired at Thomas Camera Services in Southborough Tunbridge Wells. I have to say the service was great I dropped the camera off on Tuesday and they called Wednesday night to say it was all done. Also very reasonable new IS, service, reset and 6 month warranty for £140.

Nice one! Looks like you did OK.

So that's £442 all in for a lens that you could now pretty easily sell for near enough £600. Ok it took you a bit of time and legwork - and it was a risk - but it paid off... Well done.

DID I MAKE A MISTAKE?

Yes, you should have bought Nikon.:D

I think, having taken a bit of a gamble, you have come out on the right side. It won't always be like that though - I would take this as a lesson too. You have won on this one, but you might not be so lucky next time. I would just urge caution to not get carried away on auctions!

Anyway, you now have a lens that you will find very useful - and should be virtually glued to your camera - that is a very versatile focal range.
