I have always fancied trying some macro shots, and with all the snow at the moment making it hard to get out ive decided to get a macro lens, something i can play with indoors.
I did the usual thing of searching the forums for advice, hints and tips, decided on a canon 100mm f2.8 usm. Next is to find the best price, a bit of internet searching and currys came up with the best deal i could find on a new one.
They are doing one with £20 off at the moment and £80 cash back on this lens so i went into the local store and asked the manager if this deal was still on, which it is, so i have taken the plunge and ordered one which will be ready to collect next friday.
Now im thinking it was an impulse buy and have i rushed into it, its paid for and the deal is done but im not convinced i have done the right thing :thinking:
 
I took a while to research macro lenses taking into account the costs and eventually I decided on the canon 100mm 2.8 sum non L. I think I got it for about £400 less canons cash back. I have to say I love it!! I'm not out all the time so didn't want to invest in the L series or the MP65. I use mine for all sorts, not just macro.
I'm sure you'll be pleased with it, hope to see some macro shots soon :)

Obviously I meant USM, predictive text is a great thing :/
It certainly does open up a whole new world and you can go as close to home as you want, enjoy :)
 
Having had both Canon IS and non-IS 100mm f2.8s as well as a Tamron 90, there's very little difference in sharpness between them. On balance I prefer the Tamron, there's just something about the image and colours.

Do most of my macro either on a tripod or with a small off-camera flash so IS not much use for me.

Where there is a difference is in the AF speed, Tamron is very accurate but very slow, the USM in both Canons is fast and accurate. BUT as many user use MF for their macro work any AF differences might be irrelevant.

You won't be disappointed in your Canon, especially with £100 knocked off - image quality is amazingly good for almost all macro lens. I used a £49 Cosina/Vivitar 100mm f3.5 which was as good as anything I tried!
 
As has been said already, the canon 100mm macro is a very capable macro lens and with the cash back you'll receive is a good price. I'm sure you won't regret it.
