Guys the op has said already he got the shelf d700 in the d7000 box, it's nothing to do with barcodes or HQ pricing wrong etc, the salesman has just given over the wrong camera in the d7000 box.

Keep it, it's their mistake. And they probably won't give a crap anyway, when I worked retail as a teenager we done stock checks and they were never even close! And that was Ernest jones, we would have £1500 to £2000 worth of discrepancies each time and no one ever chased it up...

I've been overcharged multiple times in shops, and it's normally so little that I'll either leave it until I'm next in there (and normally forget) or just forget about it because it would cost me more to get the refund than the refund is worth, however in cases like Tesco, where they have my address and contact details - why aren't they calling me to tell me I've been overcharged?

IMO - it works both ways, if I am overcharged and I don't notice it, I'll be none the wiser and the store makes extra profit. I've I'm undercharged and they don't notice it - they make less profit. The value here is not the issue, IMO.

And, if the assistant has made this mistake - do you honestly think the store owner/manager is ever going to be able to trust them again? I know I wouldn't want someone like that working at my store. :shrug:
 
Maybe it's all an elaborate story to explain to the wife how he got a £1700 camera when he was only allowed to spend £1000 :clap:
 
I really don't think the manager will care, it's not coming out of anyone's pay cheque so I would be amazed if it was taken any further, if/when they ever figure out what happened

If the 700 was sitting on a shelf (out of its box) it's a demo/display body - in which case the OP shouldn't have paid full price for it anyway.

I think you should return it. Let's face it, the D7000 is a lovely piece if kit as it is, and legally you are on dodgy ground. Then you could use the D7000 without feeling guilty that it really belongs to someone else...
 
Its certainly weird how it happened I work part time in a game shop (not for to much longer hopefully) and the only way I could see this happening is if the camera was out the box then put back into the D7000 box so when it scanned it would go through as a D700. On their computers they will have sold a D7000 as far as they know but the stock will be down a D700

It's possible at jessops to complete a sale without ever scanning the box. If, for example you search for an item on the till by doing, say, a stock check, the item can be added to the sale without even having the box out of the stock room. As a result, a simple typo in searching for the item could have lead to something like this happening. Ridiculous, I know! :thinking:

I went to buy my D90 from Jessops. Their computer was showing 3 in stock, plus the display model. They couldn't find any of the boxed ones... maybe they gave them out as D3000s or something :bang:


Got it from Currys next door instead.

If it's a pricing typo on a corporate website then it is more than possible for someone to get canned or given a final written if they are a permanent member of staff. If they're a contractor then they might as well pick up their desk clobber as soon as they've hit publish.

How do you know? Can you guarantee that someone who is responsible for website pricing hasn't lost their job because they mis-priced a few items at the wrong price, therefore costing the company money?

Exactly. Depending on the size of the company and the money lost due to error, it's most certainly possible that someone will get the sack.

Anyway, let's just hope the OP makes the right choice in the matter! :shrug:
 
Ok I'm on my iPhone so I can't reply to everyone and I'm surprised at the response. I won't say what store it was but it wasn't jessops... The reciept does indeed say d7000 but the serial on the reciept is the one on the box. Also I'm pretty sure once out of the store they haven't a leg to stand on.
 
major issue will be warranty then as nikon does require a copy of your receipt if it needs going in. Still lucky b****r. is the box for the d700 or d7000?

And i would imagine you won't have a leg to stand on should the camera need any warranty work, either? Still, is that a price worth paying? maybe, maybe not. only you can decide.
 
For all nikon know the stores system could have been buffered. The fact is te serial o thereciept is that of the d700. I know what you guys are saying. And clearly there are very mixed opinions on the matter here.
 
But the description doesn't match the camera and the price is wrong so there is already a grey area over what exactly it is you've bought. I'd still contact the shop, even to let them know where the missing D700 is.... and you were aware of the mistake at the time.

Once you register the warranty with nikon you'll see where you stand.

Personally if you don't want to alert the shop then how about contacting your local trading standards and see what they say? They'll know the law and will give you an honest answer. They may tell you it's too bad on the shop and we're all suckers for wanting you to take it back :)

Hmmm I'm not sure. They will have a good civil case against you as the sales agreement is for a d7000, even though their mistake has caused the issue. There is no sales agreement with regard to a d700...

My conscience would have a wrestle with my love of toys for a while, then my love of toys would kick my conscience in the goolies and come out on top as usual.

a mistake for a couple of quid yeh i could forget about and say their mistake, but to get some thing for an additonal £700 - in my eyes is theft as you now know there has been a mistake. They could well check cctv and be in touch for you to return the item, or list the item as stolen.
Surprised that you have boasted about this to be honest.
 
You mean delete the evidence that you were well aware that they had given you the wrong camera!

You called it ' have a giggle, new camera' so you came in here to gloat about it.... You could have just asked what lenses and not mentioned it!
