Having just got my lovely new 24-70 F2.8L I'm at a quandry as to whether to sell my nifty fifty (Canon 50mm F1.8 II). To be honest considering the outlay on the L glass every penny helps at the moment so the sensible thing is to sell it, but I'm wondering if I will miss it?

My use of the nifty fifty so far has been mainly for portraits cos the quality of the glass exceeded what my previous standard lens could do. I also used it sometimes for the low f stop but now I guess the new glass will negate the need for it's use on both counts?

So now I have the new kit will I ever use the fifty? I know I know I'm really the only person who can really answer it but was just wondering if anyone here has a nifty fifty and the 24-70L (or perhaps the 24-105L) and if the fifty ever comes out of the bag?

Cheers,

Marcus

I'd sell it - if were an f/1.4, I'd say keep it however...

keep it for a few months, if it's just gathering dust at the end of that time sell it!

I'd agree with this. You may find you want something very small, light and constructed from hardened refuse sacks on your being on the odd occasion. If after a month or so you don't even touch it, then flog it.

Thanks for the comments everyone, and I think Arkady and intotherainbow have hit the nail on the head really. I'd always hoped the 24-70 would negate the need for the fifty and didnt really want to keep it just for the sake of it. However hanging on to it for a little while just to see aint a bad idea.

Got a shoot tonite with the new 24-70 and I'm hoping the results from that will just void the need for the fifty.

It's the only other lens I still use on a regular basis after getting the 24-70. The bigger aperture does make a difference and there are plenty of days when I don't want to lug around the L.

if you need to shoot in low light a lot , then keep it, but otherwise not. although yes it's an amazing lightweight lens. + will you really profit from those ~50 pounds ?

My 24-70 is hardly off my camera. But when it had to go in for repair I had the fifty on permanently and was reminded how much fun it was and it made me think about how to frame the shot much more.

Personally I'd keep it, even if just for a back up in the future.

Word.

And I bet that 24-70 is just as good at f/2.8 as the nifty fifty is. Well, the nifty will probably be a bit sharper but the difference won't be much, and besides it's only a stop-ish of light - just wack the ISO up...

50mm is good for restaurants and other times when you want to make your SLR fit into the other halfs handbag.

Good luck doing that with the 24-70 2.8!
