Hi,

Probably this is going to sound like a silly question - and I really hope that's the case - but I'm afraid to have a more serious problem.
I just bought a Hasseblad 500C/M a couple of days ago and, today, it finally arrived.
Although I'm used to medium format cameras, it's the first Hassy I own. I know there are some "rules" to follow if we don't want to jam the shutter (especially removing the lens), but all I did after receiving the camera was to rotate the wind crank to cock the shutter and test it. However I have a problem, I can't remove the magazine dark slide so, there's no way I can fire the shutter.
I can remove the dark slide with the magazine off the camera, but I have to put it in place if I want to mount the magazine again.

Do you guys think it was wrong to cock the shutter before removing the dark slide? In a Bronica ETRS there's not that kind of problem, but I don't know what's happening in this case.

I just hope that I didn't jam the shutter.

Thanks for your help!

David...

Have you tried taking out the cassette ( not removing the back, and putting it back again)

What is the colour of the 2 small windows on the right hand side ( they should be of the same colour)

If not, try tripping the shutter after removing the back, such that colour in both windows are the same...

Ujjwal, thanks for your tip. I'm trying to remove the cassette, but I can't! It should be as simple as to rotate the key and push it out (at least that's what I think), but it seems locked.
At least the shutter works ok, because it works with the back off the camera!
I think the problem may be in the back. I can make one of the windows turn white, which indicates the shutter is properly cocked, however the other one has no colour (it should be red at least). The one with no color is related to the back.

Do you have any other tip to solve the problem with the back? :)

The rear windows is now white. I had to remove the back and tension the camera with the knob. However I still can't remove the cassette or the dark slide.

I'm starting to think there should be a simple solution.

David...

are both windows of the same colour ( these are 2 very small circular windows on the right side of the body - one on the body and the other on the removable back). They both should be of the same colour for the camera to work.

I just checked the manual. you can cock the body with the darkslide in place.

Try to get the white in the window of the removanle back by using the turning knob on the removable back....

Oh you cant remove the cassette....thats not good.

The cassette should come out any time....

Do you have the manual...it should be available at butkus.com

If not, i'll scan it and send it tomorrow

Thanks Ujjwal, but I found a pdf manual. ;)
Unfortunately I can't remove the cassette and I think there should be some problem in there, which is also not allowing me to remove the dark slide when the back is mounted on the camera.

The back reacts when I rotate the key, but I can't remove the holder/cassette.

I think I'm doing everything ok, according to the instructions, but I'll search a little longer. If it doesn't work, I have to talk to the previous owner.

Thanks again for your help.

David..I think there must be a problem...the cassette should come out whatever the configuration of the rest of the camera....

I decided to slightly force it, using a rope to push it by the key (no damage this way) and it finally came out! Now I can remove it anytime I want without any kind of problem. The dark slide is also easy to remove.

What a relief!

Good result david...

Just for my future ref. can you explain again what you did, please. By rope, do you mean thread? which key was that? And what were you pushing ? ( Just to make sure i know what to do if mine develops the same problem)

I'm sorry for my english, Ujjwal.
By "rope" I mean this:

In the back there is a key you have to turn counter-clockwise in order to remove the film holder. I was doing everything ok but, even after turning that key, the holder didn't want to come out, since it was locked on the inside. Probably due to lack of use.
What I did was to push the holder using a rope on that key.

Not a very brilliant idea, but there wasn't another solution. I had to push very hard, but it worked and nothing was damaged.

A very simple and quick draw, in case my english was too confusing.

Ah...good solution....

You might (a) wish to check for any light leak, which is easy to fix; and (b) see if it catches again. The worst will be if if refuses to come out after you have exposed a roll.

What lens did you get?

I just got a Kiev 88 TTl prism today from USA, where, ironically, there seems to be an unending supply of this Ruskie stuff. Got to check the meter accuracy this week end

Yeah, I'll check if there's any light leak, but the back seems to fit very tight.

The camera came with the Hasselblad Carl Zeiss Planar T* 80mm f/2.8 CF lens. The CF is much better than the older version. The lens looks like it just came out of the factory. The rest of the camera, including the back and the WLF, is also in mint condition. I'll take a photo later and post it in here.
I think it's impossible to get a 500C/M more clean than this. I had some (exotic) Nikkor lenses for sale and I did a trade with a guy a know from Finland.

Those Kiev are really nice and not very expensive. Another "cheap" and great model is the Pentacon Six.

you should be ok, mine meters exactly against my canon digi kit (with test exposures and histograms too) :D

I almost forgot about the photos.
Isn't she beautiful?

How can you ever go out of your house carrying such an ugly and technologically backward camera, David?

It doesn't even have a LCD screen.

Get rid of it, I say:lol:

It's not bad I suppose. It's no Bronica though is it;)

I prefer 'em in chrome, but that's a minty looking blad you picked up there!
