Yes
As I am looking for a new laptop, I was wondering if anyone had used Windows 8 touchscreen as part of a dual screen set up to edit photos.

My idea is that I have the tools etc on the laptop and the image on my monitor and selecting tools and photos by tapping the screen, rather than rememberIng shortcuts or moving across with the mouse. Maybe even adding a tablet, so it's simply tap and draw.

What are people's thoughts and experiences with something like this?

I have a touchscreen laptop, but don't use it that way. You would need one that converted to a tablet or the screen folded back flat.

Thanks for that Dale. Not quite sure I'm with you, it may be my fault due to being a bit unclear in what I want to do. I'll try and go into a bit more detail

Currently I use my Laptop with the tools on open, I extend my desktop to a calibrated monitor. My plan in to do the same, but rather than having to move the cursor to the laptop, select the brush etc and then go back, I cam simply tap the laptop screen to select the brush and continue with my right hand.

Hope this makes a bit more sense

Moving your mouse from one screen to another is more efficient than using another limb to prod at a touchscreen.

It would work in principle though, provided the laptop screen is low enough res/scaled up to enable easy prodding.

I thought you were asking to use the laptop more as a graphics tablet, ie drawing or retouching using the touchscreen.

The mouse will be quicker and more precise. I mainly use touch for scrolling on my laptop.

That was my thought Dale, the editing would be done with either mouse or tablet, with the touchscreen purely used to either select/rate pictures in library or select brushes/tools in develop. Left hand selects, right hand draws

Just had a quick play with the Win8 PS app to se how easy left hand button pressing is and it works OK. I reckon that I would be better using my right hand to do it but that's geography and personal ergonomics!

Have been trying out a Lenovo hybrid, it has a detachable key board, with the keyboard attached runs windows 8 in PC mode with out the keyboard it run the tablet version. You can tap on the screen in laptop mode but I have found that I don't. It's very good for normal work MS office and presentations but not sure I would want to edit pictures on their! at the moment far less accurate than a mouse! but in a few years I am sure we will be.

As I understand it, Chris is wanting to use the touchscreen purely for selecting tools and will be using a conventional mouse or tablet (as in graphics tablet rather than iPad!) for the actual selection and other fine adjustments.

My wife has a Lenovo Yoga (well, she is a Yoga teacher!) which folds in half so can be used as a normal laptop/netbook, a tablet or an A-frame. I use a Win8 netbook/laptop and use the touchscreen a lot for button presses and swipes but turn the trackpad on if I need to select carefully. I don't use either for image manipulation beyond simple cropping and resizing and use the touchscreen for that - "proper" PP gets done on a desktop using a trackball.

This is exactly what I'm wanting to do
