Hi,

My laptop seems to be giving up the ghost, so I've been looking round for a replacement. I really don't want a machine that runs Windows 8,so in the process of trying to find a computer with Windows 7 I've come across a company called PC Specialist. Their website lets you fully customise the laptop/pc and the quote I've ended up with is pretty amazing.
I just wondered if anyone has had any experience with this company? I've seen other online reviews which all look pretty good, but thought I'd ask here as well

Never heard of them. My advice, buy from a reputable company. You can always buy win 7 to put on a laptop or wait a bi as win 8.1 is coming it soon which apparently will make win 8 a lot better!

Thanks for the reply :-). The price did look a bit too good to be true. I have backup discs of Windows 7 for the laptop I have now, but I thought that if I installed it on a new laptop it would void the warranty? Am I right?

I used them to build my system about 2 years ago.. I have 24gb of ram :)

It still works ;)

If I remember it took about a week to get it...

Haven't needed to use any aftersales so can't comment on that...

Easy ordering, and great customisation...

I do seem to remember that one of my selected components wasn't available - so they offered me a comparible which was a pound or two extra for the same price...

Usually a laptop will come with 2 partitions. Ne usually had the files on it for doing a system factory restore. As long as you leave that partition alone then I am sure all will be ok. I have put a dif windows on a laptop and reverted back later to factory default. If you know what you are doing it should be fine.

I use Win 8 and it does take a bit of getting used to but it is fine to use. As I said, there is a free update coming out soon that will allow you to use it more like win 7.

Thanks Chris. Wow - 24gb sounds massive.

I'm a bit pushed for space so I want to get another laptop. I didn't muck about madly with the standard specs they have on the site as I'm not sure if I'd need to change very much, but the quote for a 17'' laptop with 8gb memory was less than £500. The only other sites I've seen with Windows 7 are trade sites and a comparable laptop would be much more expensive.

Thanks again Raincloud. I don't know whether I'll be able to wait too long for the updated Win 8, this thing's getting very cranky and it's not liking booting up at all

Just had a quick look and that's for the lowest spec CPU you can get. You would probably want to up that if you want to do any significant processing on it.

I'm writing this on one of their machines. Had it over 2 years now. They came highly recommended by a "geek" I know. Had a problem initially that required a new motherboard, but all sorted out, and it has worked perfectly since then. They have(or had) a forum where you can discuss your exact requirements. This has been much better than the Dell it replaced.

They will certainly be high on my list as when I get round to upgrading.

Hi Andy, thanks for looking at the website & the spec. Could you give me an idea about what spec of CPU I should be looking for? It would mainly be used for processing photos (obviously), no gaming or anything like that.

Cheers

Assuming your looking at the 17" Voyager II, I'd want the i5-3230M as a minimum. Adds another £80 or so... That's almost 2x as powerful as the base processor. To get another 2x raw performance, you need to jump to the quad cores which adds another £150ish.

Basically, minimum spec generally recommended is an i5 with 8G memory.

Thanks again Andy - I'm not much good with technical stuff so I really appreciate the help. Even with the extra £80, the price doesn't look bad compared to others I've seen

ordered laptop for my mate form there 3 years ago. no complains yet. pretty solid build quality.

Thanks Mickledore & Asaspasas6 :-)
They sound like a good bet. There is a phone number on their website so I think I'll give them a call and talk about exactly what I'd like from a computer. According to the website, their computers have a 3 year guarantee which sounds good. I also like being able to customise the computer (not that I know much about the techy side), but in theory it should mean I'll get something decent that'll do what I want it to do.

I have bought over 20 PC Specialist PC's and two laptops over the last five years. All were received in good time, exactly as spec and have performed perfectly in everyday office/graphics environments. No recent warranty issues. I do remember one from years back where after discussion on the 'phone, they sent a replacement graphics card - Much better than having to return whole unit! Only orderd base units - I can't comment on their monitors. Although I am now retired, I continue to recommend them to friends and no complaints up to now. I wouldn't go anywhere else. I have no connection with the company beyond being a satisfied customer.

I got a PC built by PC Specialist a few months back and theywere excellent!!!

Ordered on a Monday evening and selected the Saurday delivery option, it was delivered the following Saturday morning. That was a completely custome build, built and delievered in 4 working days!

The machine does what it says on the team, no unncessary software installed, just Windows waiting to be configured :)

Can't rate them highly enough.

I got my laptop from them and they were really good, no hassle at all.
