It is quite straight forward if you know what you want, I have used TypeTool in order to create a couple of letters for a clients logo, which they where able to install on their system as a normal font to use for all company related correspondence.
Best way to get start is to sketch out all the letters in the alphabet or the letters you want in lowercase and uppercase and start from there,
The cheating way is to take a font already installed on your machine and edit it in typetool by dragging the points about to create a custom version of the font.
