Yes
I got a rather surprising call from a chap at Nikon UK today, asking about what gear I use! He seemed a little miffed when I said Canon...but proceeded to ask me if he could arrange a try out of a D3 for me, quickly declined with the excuse of Focus round the corner....plus, Canon seem to need all the help they can get at the moment  Then again, so must Nikon if they're resorting to cold calling!

Just thought it was odd though, they must be trawling the net for photographers, as he said he had been looking at my site!

I did read elsewhere on the internet that Nikon are lending out D3Xs to less well known professionals that they ever previously would have.
seems that they are having to jog sales along.

Must admit I would have taken him up you don`t have to buy after using it but if you decided to change I am sure he could have arranged a sustantial 'discount' for you.

they can lend one to me and quite a few lenses - would the house insurance cover any losses? :naughty:

but i still love my fuji s5

I know that fuji used to do it because my friend who is a wedding tog had a s2,s3 and s5 all on try out from them as they became available for the market......I think that Nikon must be feeling the pinch or changing thier marketing strategy...hopefully slow sales will eventually end up with price reductions....you should have given him a bum address and took the camera..Haha

I was at a game in the last few days chatting to a PA photographer who had a 400 lens on a canon 1dmkII and a 24-70 on a mkIII as he said the 24-70 was the only lens he could get a decent picture out of the mkIII .. He then went on to say that he recently had chance to demo a D3 and would swap over first chance he got...

Looks like nikons approach is to target the industry then hobbyists will follow

I have just under 10k of canon gear because it was canon for sports.. all sporting events had lines of white lens on canon bodies... had all those pro sports togs had nikon then I would probably have gone that way.

Heres a question then, would you take them up on their offer if they called you, assuming they were happy to lend a lens aswell?

I hope more people switch to Nikon because a reduction in sales for Canon and the increase in used Canon good on the second hand market = lower prices which is good for me :D

Yes I would becasue now I am wondering if there is a big gap.

The thought of swapping is a bit of a nightmare and the money already spent is at its limit... Would need to look into ways of swapping without massive cost..

Maybe if I get my mkIII back and its workign perfectly.. then I may change my mind.. but if they fix the current lens catch problem but the other problems still there then tempted..

Hmmm....so Nikon might be doing the right thing if they can get broaden their customer base by making converts - looking forward to seeing how this thread develops, whether thay are targeting pro and semi pro canon users only or all togs in those categories....

I got a call when the D3 came out and Nikon gave me the D3 and two lenses for a week.
I never made the switch over from Canon, I had spent to much money on Canon, and wasnt that impressed with the D3 over my 1DMKIII's anyway.

One has to ask: if Nikon (and Canon) are getting so desparate to sell their goodies why the hell are they making humungous price increases, so much so that they are putting their (better) equipment out of reach of most amateurs.

Exactly! Perhaps the price rises have been enforced from HQ...against the advice of their UK divisions?

perhaps it's the other way around - the large price increases (brought on by currency exchange slippage) are making them work harder to try to sell stuff.
it's very, very easy to sell stuff at a loss but it's not usually considered to be a viable long-term business strategy :p

They're not making humungous price rises. At least, not in Japan where the things are built. All we're seeing here is the effect of sterling going down the toilet.

I agree it's the value of the pound that's causing the problem - I have a 5 euro note left from a holiday which cost me £3.95 now it worth £4.45 - I was also around when Harold Wilson? said "this won't affect the pound in your pocket" ... no it's only when you try to spend it.

Hi Nikon if your are listen and want me to test some telephoto lens - give me a call. :)

dear nikon i,m a lesser known pro tog (honest) can i borrow a d3x pleaseeeeee:lol::lol::lol:

And why not PC? You have some great work on your site. They wouldn't want to offer a duffer like me the opportunity; or would they?

If they are anything like the tool manufacturers in the woodwork industry, then they might well leave the camera with you when you've done the road test! Or maybe you just prefer not to have a Nikon!

Again, nice work..

Regards
John

If they would only reduce their profit margins then they'd be able to keep the prices down!

I doubt that Nikon UK had a 40% profit margin to start with & that is how much the £ has slipped against the yen.
would you rather that they sold at a loss & subsequently went out of business?

A collegue of mine (full time pro) who used to shoot Canon gear got approached about 12 month ago with the offer to take all his gear off him that was less than 4 years old at a preferential rate if he was willing to switch and use the money to fund the purchase of new Nikon equipment also at a preferential rate, he actually paid only £1999 for his D3, he was offered a loan D3 and a 300mm lens and a 70-200mm lens for 2 weeks along with one to one support and a 4 DVD training course.

Needless to say he bit his hand off and is now a very happy Nikon snapper.

I have heard similar offers being put forward but only to recognised full time professionals, i would jump ship tomorrow if i got the same or a similar offer, its something ive seriously thought of doing ever since the botched up MKIII sub mirror scam but ive too much invested just to try and sell up and then transfer over.

Unless there is one of you willing to purchase all my gear on block

PSSSSST, anyone wanna but a brand new MKIII an as like new MKII-N with about 1,000 shutter actuations, an EF 400mm L IS USM F/2.8, an EF 24-105mm L IS USM F/4, an as new Speedlite 430 EX and a few other ods and sods

There were rumours at the time of the Bejing Olympics of Canon shooters being offered deals to switch....

the bloke im talking about went onto work for Getty Images covering Premiership football and because they paid him so well he was able to claim all the VAT back as well.

Where do these calls come from? I ask as Ive had numerous missed calls fro Quebec in Canada but never any voicemails, Im scared to call it back incase its a scam that charges me a fortune.

Not saying it is Nikon Im missing calls from but its the closest thing I can pinpoint too.
