Has anyone completed the Photography Institute online course?

on a seperate note, I really like your 'portfolio' .... :D

Online courses are a waste of money in my opinion, all the information is available to you for free, on the internet, just do a bit of searching/reading and go out and practice.

I don't think anyone can teach a person to be creative. You either are, or you aren't.

Poor courses online or face to face can be a waste of time.

Well designed courses, online or face to face, will help you focus on the relevant topics, should enable a faster a learning experience in a structured layout that will keep you motivated to learn.

Using google \ bing \ youtube \ forums are a great aid to learning, but the majority of people will improve considerably from a good course. By the sounds of things, this is one such course. Of course it's not for everyone and you have to be self motivated to do any course.

Hi guys quick question, I've just looked on there website and i cannot find anywhere about getting the "scuffed" coarse anywhere. The only ones I can find is either the full coarse for £527 or the online coarse which you dont get certain things and that's £427. Help!!!!!!!

For the opportunity to get scuffed course offers, you need to sign up to the newsletter

Ah right. I've subscribed to something where I'm getting tips sent through every day ill see if I can find this news letter :-)

Look no further! After a few emails you'll get an offer when they have some available

right here.. Scuffed Course

Wow. You are all to kind, thank you very much. It says there is only 4 left in the warehouse, is this something that keeps on topping up every so often?

yep .. said only 4 when i purchased mine then i checked back to see if it had gone down to 3 but it never did. Seems like they have more but use the 4 to make it more appealing ... anyhows it all good news for us saving a bit of cash!

Awesome cos I'm planning on starting the end of august time so fingers crossed they will have some then. This tread has been amazingly informative regarding this coarse I'll be checking back in from time to time with updates. Thumbs :-)

Can someone on the course give a list of assignment topics? I can't seem to find this info on the IPP website.

Thanks.

First assignment done! It was a useful exercise for thinking about where I'm at and what direction I'm heading in and also good for my tutor to get to know a bit more about me. Going to start module 3 tomorrow. :D

I'm looking in to this course and just have a couple of questions to those enroled . Have you joined the NUS and is there any photo gear shops that give you discount ? Also can you purchase Photoshop as a student if you take this course ?

I'd be interested in knowing this too. I've not applied for an NUS card yet as the letter said they are given Aug - Aug and you'd only get it for a year I think so better to wait. (Need to check when in Aug as I could get one now I suppose.)

Question to others who have done the course. I'm doing the second assignment where you have to take photos of someone at work/hobby. As one of my hobbies is dancing I was going to do shots of a dance teacher - some posed, some candid. Do you think that would be ok?

That sounds like a subject that could be very creative

Hope so! I'm trying to think of a range of shots - some candid and posed ones - some just her doing her 'job' and some that show the class in backgroud. (A lot of them are used to seeing me with my camera as I often take it along to special events and social nights.)

the dance photos sound like a great idea .. i dont really know anyone with any interesting hobbies, so struggling with a idea for this one!

I took a while thinking of something too - it can also be someone working I think?

I was thinking with mine I might also get some shots my friend can use on her website/flyers so she can get something out of it too and it gives me an extra challenge of getting shots she likes as well.

Hope you find someone for the assignment.

Hey hey!

First of all, i'd like to thank all of you that have taken the time to post write-ups and answer questions, it's been a fantastic help and i'll be signing up tomorrow! :D

I can't wait to get started!

Also, special thanks to whoever posted the link to the 'Scuffed' course deal as it's saved me a mahoosive £158 :)

I've only recently started it Carl but I also signed up based on what I'd read in this thread and so far I'm enjoying it. :D

I've just signed up for the Scuffed Course, my tutor is Ray Kilby.

I can't wait to get started!
He's my tutor too. So far I've only submitted the first (written) assignment and he gave good detailed feedback on the various things I'd said.

I'm doing my photos for the next assignment next week. They send you little emails every so often which serve as a good reminder to get on and do the next module!

Just ordered my "scuffed" coarse. Hopefully won't have to wait to long for it to arrive! Can't wait to get stuck into this coarse work :-)

Did you find anyone yet Gareth?

I did my shoot for this last night. Really enjoyed it and so did my friend. A very useful exercise as it got me thinking and trying different angles and I had a list of shots I wanted before I started, so it was a good discipline to try to work to that, as well as other shots as I saw them. Now to start the editing...

My course turned up yesterday and I have to say I am really impressed! There is a lot to take in and there is no way I'm going to rush through it, I want to do each module properly and take it all in. One thing I am a bit worried about as i work full time 2-10 and also some mornings and I know it says learn in your own time but let's say for instance it took me 12 months to complete or longer, would that be a problem do you think?

I don't think that would be a problem, it is a case of learn at your own pace. Not all modules have assignments so some are quicker to do than others. I'm just about to submit my second assignment which is for module 3. I'm definitely learning stuff - mostly though having structure which is making me think about what I'm doing. So yes, take your time and you'll get more out of it than by rushing through.

Not found anyone yet Lynn ... been moving house so unfortunately the course has been on the back burner for a few weeks! now my girlfriend has moved up with me there is no excuse for posing as the model for module 2!! haha

glad your shoot went well .. my tutor is ray kilby too!

Hope the house move has gone well. Moving can be a real hassle, definitely not a good time to be trying to study.

That's the advantage of a course in your own time, if something else comes up it can be left aside for a few weeks. I'm quite good at procrastination though so I like how they keep sending info emails, reminds me to get on with the next module.

The emails stop after a while lol, I'm now about 4 months behind where I wanted to be. Been monster busy at work so spending more time at weekends with the kids etc. (neither are particularly good excuses though).
Worked through quite a lot of the modules with no assignments but need to get my head back on to actually get the assignments done.
Hopefully hearing how you guys are getting on will give me the kick I need.

Yes, we should keep each other motivated and encouraged to keep going! I had plans to study today and got sidetracked with other stuff and now don't have enough time. Its hard to fit in sometimes if you don't set aside time.

Sods law that as soon as my course arrives through the post i'm mega busy for the next 2 weeks!

I just got my Module 2 assignment back and scored an A+, so i'm pretty chuffed!
Here's hoping I can find some time to fit in Module 3's assignment, it should be an interesting one!

Tell me about it! My course turned up last week and every time I go to sit down to even attempt the first assignment I have to go out. Next week I'm sitting down with no phone, computer or any other distractions and getting on with it!

I've just enrolled, with a scuffed course. (I cant understand why anyone would pay full price.....or is that just because Im a Yorkshireman?!)

Looking forward to the bumf arriving and getting focussed on moving what is now a hobby, further.

Is there a communal flickr group or anything?

Don't know about Flickr, it would be good if there was more opportunity for interaction with fellow students.

I meant to get my third assignment done this week but then decided I'd wait til my new lens arrives and have been busy since. Typical!

I just enrolled too, Its a scarily BIG box that gets delivered!!
This soft southerner digs scuffed deals :-)
Have you been online to look at your course?

My tutor is Michael Taylor
........ Eyes down for the 1st round!!
