Has anyone completed the Photography Institute online course?

hi guys, do they still offer money back if you dont make the course fees back 90 days after completeing course if you go for the scrub version?
 
Hi guys, i have read through the thread and am very interested in taking the course. I would like to hear from someone who has taken the course. Does it cover the basics at the start, or is it aimed at the experianced photographer looking to go pro?

Hello Caroline,

Sorry I haven't got back to you but I have been away on holiday and only just picked up the thread again.

I continue to be really positive about this course, I have learned loads and will continue to learn for many years to come.

I would say as a complete novice you may find the course challenging but I say that to encourage you to sign up as opposed to put you off.

Some modules are difficult and some are easy, its swings and roundabouts. I too, Like bucketp struggled with module 7 due to weather conditions but my tutor had little sympathy. "As a pro you need to get out whatever the weather, use your skills to turn a drab day into something good to look at" which I did and got a reasonable mark.

Its worth doing and the support is first class.

Labs rock! :-)

i was heading along those lines but just been out in the car and got a brilliant idea for my object .....now just to find one :)
 
all pics done for module 5 ...now at the humming and hawing stage of whether to use them or start all over again :(

Sounds familiar ! - I found that asking someone who knows nothing about photography at all helps to whittle down the contenders though so there's a lot fewer to agonise over. Spent 3 weeks umming and ahhing for the last module. Hope it goes OK.

Sadly been mental busy at work so not had any shooting time. Have got an idea developing though.....

Just had my results back for Module 11. A- so pretty pleased with that. Now on to Portraits!

How are you getting on William?
 
despite getting this course in Feb, due to work commitments I`ve still not gotten anywhere near it :bonk::bonk::bonk::( Hopefull get started in next week or so...

Tell me about it....I got it for my 40th in November and have read the first module and havent had the time to sit down and progress....NEED TO MAKE A START.......:bang::bang::bang:

I've been a bit stuck on mod 7 waiting for nice weather. Just done mod 23 sport and will send that off tomorrow. I spoke with my tutor and he said you can do the modules in any order you want. Glad it's going well for you

well the revised explanation on module 5 certainly helps ... i just got an A- on it :)

now to do module 6 at work this weekend and hopefully some good weather next week for module 7 :)

Hi guys been keeping upto date with this thread over the past few weeks and ive at last registered up to do the course, so i will be picking brains on this thread, its nice to see you guys are enjoying it, and will be nice to swap advice ect on here, by the way how long did it take for you guys to recieve your course from when you registered, 2-3 days??? So keep up the good work and ill be intouch very shortly.

Good for you Andy.

I am now on the portrait phase of the course and enjoying it immensely. I have have my work marked by using a blog, I upload my images and written work and send the tutor a link, it seems to work really well. My tutor says it makes her life so much easier than receiving emails with images attached.

I am going to transfer all my assignments to my blog in the near future and I will be happy to send folk who are doing the course a link to see what I have done so far.

Enjoy it and get stuck in mate!
 
Nice one Andy, I think it took about 3 or 4 days for my stuff to arrive, plenty to read through when you get it. If you need any help let us know. I upload my pics to Flickr and send my tutor a link to the page and send all my written stuff as a word doc linking to the images in flickr. There's a lot to get through and some of the assignments can sound confusing, i find a quick email to my course advisor usually sorts this out. You don't have to do the modules in order which is a relief as I was stuck waiting for nice weather for Mod 7.

Hi there quaker, yes its arrived, and all i thought was wow and a large GULP :gag: :lol:, theres alot there, i have one question for you regarding module 1, after youve done the 1st exercise do you just email it to your tutor for marking, im just unsure how this all works at the moment?

Hi Andy

Don't send exercises to your tutor just send them your completed modules. They don't have to become in order.

Hey all, been some time since i last posted n this thread. all is going well for me, i started this course in the first week of January, am now up to module 13ish, the wedding one i have to submit, been floating on this for 3 weeks now trying to get someone to model, have got something planned for this sunday so hopefully it will work out well.
I have found the course to be really helpful, ive learnt so much over the past 3 months, to the point i had my first paid shoot on saturday, the father was so happy with the results he gave me £100 for me time.... talk about chuffed. after doing the portrait shoot things just kinda started happning on their own.... hope everyone else is enjoying this as much as i am.

We are at the same stage, I am still looking for the wedding model though, its turning out to be really difficult to organize.

Like you, the Portrait Assignment has opened doors for me, I posted some of the images I did for the module on Facebook and within hours I was booked to do a Christening this weekend. Really excited about doing it.

I am really enjoying it too.
 
i think the course is designed in such a way that when you do the portrait shoot you have the compentacy to start taking on small jobs... since then i had my first paid shoot last weekend and im booked in for two pet shoots, another baby shoot, a family portrait, a 90th birthday party and my most exciting one... a well known band has asked if i would do something for them... must be doing something right haha
its a steap learning curve, i dont think for a second I know even close to half of what there is to know, but im still managing to produce something people seem to really like...
im looking forward to the wedding shoot this weekend, think it could be good for the portfolio... we will see :D

has anyone had a grade lower than a 'B'???????????? i am not saying that to boast but i dont think some of my submissions have been up to scratch and still get a half decent result, and im just wondering if its just a big feel good factor thing..... give everyone good grades, make them feel good about themselves and they will love it and reccomend it....?
just a thought.......?

Thats a good and valid point and one that I have also considered.

You could well be right but from a personal point of view I have thrown myself into it and worked really hard to produce images of quality. No disrespect to your good self, but there is no way I would submit any work which I didn't think were up to scratch and I was not 100% happy with. Its defeats the object.

I can honestly, hand on heart say, since starting the course I have seen a dramatic improvement in my own ability and I am only just over halfway through.

If what you say is true I would be disappointed but not wrecked. Its a recognised qualification of sorts, it comes with guarantees of success. On the back of this course I have had real shoots which I would never have imagined I would have. So its all good for me.

My advice to you would be not to focus on the grade but to focus on improving your technique and getting value for your money.

Hi Quaker, been reading your posts over the past few months and always a good point to be made.. I have also throwen myself into the course and can definatly say i have seen my photography improve, the module i was refering to was the wedding one, mishap after mishap meant i ended up using different models than planned, weather wasnt right, took me weeks to finally get a shoot. i was happy with some of the images but not all but due to how long it had taken i submitted them anyway... my suspicion arose when i got a good grade back with good feedback.... maybe its just me..... i hope not :D

I am really struggling with the wedding module, I cant get models unless I dig VERY deep into my pockets. I have advertised locally to do a budget wedding for free but got nothing back.

I may have to put this one on the back burner for a while and move on to another module.

I can see me struggling really bad with this one.
 
im up to module 9 and was worrying about the wedding one ...but its funny how fate plays its hand .. a very good friend is getting married at the beginning of june and want me to be 2nd tog (as a favour to them)
bonus is im going to get the pics i need for the wedding module :)

i ended up using friends posing as if they were getting married. it doesnt HAVE to be an actual wedding with the white dress and all, the tutor is looking for you to show you are able to capture those shots that would make a wedding... like the ring on the finger for an example.
saying that, if you can get an actual wedding then all the better.

have we all got different tutors? mine is graham light... anyone else?
 
I am hoping to have the wedding covered in the next couple of weeks. :-)
