The flashes and equipment provided FITP? I can tell that his stuff is really popular from the thread, but before spending my hard earned cash on any purchase I always try and research as much as possible to get best value for money!

My budget is around £125 and I am using a Canon EOS 350D on a manfrotto tripod - i Have a Sunpak pf30x flash but dont think this is suitable for strobist. Main use for set up will be portraits indoors and outdoors. Main consideration, future proofing so buying kit I wll be able to add too and not have to replace once I get the hang of it...

I have spoken with Graham from FITP who has been really helpful in advising what equipment he has to offer. I think I have narrowed down my choices through him to..

Either the YongNuo YN 460 II or YN 465 TTL as a flash.
RF 602 Triggers
32" Softbox (with free stand)

The aim is to start doing off camera flash. Now as far as I can tell, this will allow me to use 1 flash, off camera diffused by the softbox and I wouldnt need anything else.

Can anyone advise of their experiences with the above equipment, if I would need anything else and if I would need anything further to use my sunpak flash too or any other product recomendations

Cheers in advance Rob

Have you had a look at his iTrader page? I'm sure it'll put your mind at ease :)

As for value for money, I don't think you'll do much better without importing it, and then you could be stung for import duties, taxes etc. And you know if anything goes wrong you can get it sorted ASAP!

softbox is good

flashes are a bit crap but they are cheap so you pays your money and takes your choice

rf 602s are great triggers, bit easy to lose the transmitter though :bang:

the free stands are konigs - a bit crappy tbh but good to play with I have calumet folding stands that are similar to his frotto rip off ones and they're great

dunno what umbrella adapters he carries now but the ball head ones are ****, I use a frotto 026 and it has been brilliant

Cheers Chris, I had figured with a rating like that he must be pretty good!

David, thanks certainly gives me something to think about.. I think its the flash that concerns me I dont want to buy another flash not fit for purpose but looking for option new or SH in the region of £50 if you have any ideas...

well the recycle is slow and power is limited, but for that price ball park its what you get

Canon flashes are worth the extra in my book. Just that I can't afford them on my current workload :(

£50 is not a lot of flash tbh... I've recently been looking at what was around and in the end settled on the Canon 430EXII, definatelty not the cheapest but I wanted something that I could buy onve and not have to worry about upgrading, the 430EXII ticked all the boxes.

There were some cheaper flashes around but everyone I spoke to said the build quality just wasn't a patch on the canon's...

i agree with David, the FITP softboxes are very good, they're well made, robust and extremly portable and i would recommend them, (as the softbox now comes with a free stand, they're certainly a good deal)...
Flash trigger RF602's have some really good reviews and am contemplating ordering a set myself ...
lastly, the YongNou flashes seem to do a decent job as part of a set of strobes, but it apears that most togs outgrow them and find themselves wanting more... personally i would save a little and wait for a secondhand 430EX...

Cheers for the input Danny, I think you are right I might actually invest in a SH 430 EX now and build it up around that...

I bought the koenig stands from Amazon before FITP started doing them. They are lightweight but work well. Just beware of winds etc when using with a brolly. With just a flash attached they are fine without weighting down.

I've not used the softbox but I have three of the three way brollys (£16-17?)which are great but not as strong as the very expensive ones from other manufacturers. One is slightly bent from a stand falling over (see above :D) btu otherwise have stood up the the rigours of my use absolutely fine.

RF602 triggers are brilliant. I've used them as camera triggers and flash triggers over a long, long way.

Thanks for all the help! I bit the bullet and have ordered the Yongnuo 460 flash, rf602's, the twin diffuser softbox and a thingymajig to fit the softbox on my tripod. I figured this is a cheap way to get into lighting and strobist stuff and now I can't wait.

With regards to service so far from Graham@FITP, it has been top notch, great communication, as for delivery etc not received goods yet but will update soon. Meant to check if there is any kind of warranty on the gear but forgot whoops!

Be prepared for many more questions!

Found a great link by the way to a Gavin hoey training vid on using a softbox...
