Hi,

Has anybody been out specifically to a location, sat and waited for a bird of prey. I know guys get quite alot of grab shots whilst driving around but has anybody gone out specifically in the aim of capture a BOP ? I would like to try it but im not sure if i see the point, so i was wondering if anybody had done it with positive results, as knowlage that somebody can do it succsessfully would really motivate me to do it myself.

Also anybody who has done this do you any tips that have helped you get the shot like bait...following bird calls ect.?

Not yet but am about to try baiting Buzzards near my hide.
 
Yep, I've been out to the same place over and over trying to get Red Kite photos. I wanted something better than the usual bird against a blue sky shot, wanted something that would show them hunting in their surroundings. 3 days on the trot and the best I managed were these:

Not %100 pleased with them seeing as they were the best three shots from 3 days sitting around but hoping to try again later in the year.

Be prepared to visit the same location over and over and to not get lots of shots straight away. Wildlife photography is a waiting game so if you don't have patience then it may not be your thing. Driving round aimlessly can get you lucky but more often than not is even more frustrating than camping out in the same spot and waiting.
 
Those shots were definately worth the wait, i would wait 3 days of total boredom to capture something as unique as those! There was a spot where me and friend used to go and watch buzzards at the same time each weekend about a year ago, whats the chances of them still being there. I don't mind waiting but it would be annoying finding nothing to be there !
 
Well the trick is to do your research nline first to find out where good potential sites are. Then go stake them out. Driving out in to the middle of nowhere and just sitting around will nearly always end in failure (not that you'd do that of course). So just do some research, find out where things are then go check it out. Last year I went to Oxford to a field to get some short eared owls as they only spend a couple of weeks there before moving on, got absolutely nothing! Saw about 3 birds and that was it - but we only went for 1 day.
 
I cheated slightly.....

I'd been to Chinnor a few times and had spotted quite a lot of Red Kites in the surrounding area so on the next visit I took my camera to find at least 12 of them flying over the village centre :D

From what I've heard some of the locals feed them in their back gardens :clap:

Yep your quite right Mr G
Another quite close location is Princess Risborough,
same thing, the locals feed them there as well they can be seen at "rooftop height"
even along the main road A4010
heading out towards Wycombe

but yes i have been out looking and you can get some good shots that are worth the wait...:thumbs:
 
have had a kestral working the field at the back of my house the last week or so, only thing is the rooks are trying to chase him/her away.i can stand and watch the hovering all day . think they have a favorite place like a post to rip up there kill. just a case of looking till you find it, and then maybe you can get a little closer to them.
 
There are a number of Red Kite feeding stations around. This one is worth a visit with hides ready for paying photographers. I'm going back to the area in May so I might pop in again.

I'm also considering baiting the local Buzzard group as they're only a mile from my house. Just doesn't seem to be any roadkill bunnies around at the moment though!
 
im in northumberland, as far as away from wales as it gets before getting into scotland, not sure im gonna be able to trek there folks !
